Potty training rewards

At what point do you stop giving them? DD is consistently using the potty- even finally pooped on the potty today (for the second time, but the first time was a fluke). She gets gummy bears as a reward, because it was something she wouldn't normally get. Now she's getting them a zillion times a day and gets soo excited to get them. When do you stop giving them? When do they stop asking for their special potty rewards?

Re: Potty training rewards

We stopped giving them when he eventually stopped asking, took a month or so, then I transitioned to a sticker chart and that did the trick, once chart was full he didn't ask for any stickers anymore.

About 8-9 days of no accidents going on the potty the whole time is when I stopped.

I stopped when he was indifferent and I started forgetting. If she's still getting excited then it is probably still reinforcing for her.

Re: Potty training rewards

I never gave a reward for peeing. For some reason it came pretty natural to him.

Poop on the other hand has been a major issue for us. He was petrified to poop on the potty. When he finally did it he got a piece of chocolate (something we rarely keep in the house) we needed to show what a big deal it was that he did it.

He has consistently been pooping on the potty now for a couple of weeks but I usually only give him a reward if he asks. And even then sometimes I just brush it off and hope he forgets.

Re: Potty training rewards

I did a sticker chart and gradually increased the number of stickers that would equal a reward. I think for pee we did about 1 week for those prizes but for poop we did about a month and a half. It took DS longer to figure that out. We started with small prizes and worked our way up to one big prize. I explained before he got to the big prize that there will be no more prizes at the end. We made him a certificate and he got to go to Chucky Cheese.

I was giving a food reward each time DD went on potty, but now she gets a reward for a whole day of no accidents...a lip gloss! I will still give her a food reward if she asks, but she usually doesn't. With my DS I had a reward chart.

Re: Potty training rewards

When he pooped on the potty he still got his "treat" but pee pee went to a sticker, after three days into him pooping I took away the treat and set him up with something fun directly after ie watercolor painting, or playing outside. Total distraction. Also I have thought about if it's hard buy a soap that is special and afterward that is her treat washing with their special soap!!!

My sons trained very very quickly ...they wanted rewards for about 4 days, then just stopped asking.
