Sensory moms- always stepping on something?

I'm still educating myself but he's always stepping on things, like he can't just stand around on the floor, he has to stand on something else, a book, a toy, a block, a pillow, etc.

What can I do for this? I don't so much mind except he's broken a couple of toys doing it. It's like he's looking for additional reinforcement of being grounded or something maybe...??

He is definitely looking for proprioceptive input in his feet. Just offer him things like texture stepping stones, or the texture ball type balls that you step on, or a balance beam, trampoline, walk in sand without shoes, walk around the house a lot without socks or shoes.

Vibrator massage thing on his feet. Push the small textured balls into his feet or any type of texture.

There is this toy called the bilbo, you can balance on.

Any way you can give him the input in his feet.

You can also give him a lot of pillows to crash into, or squish into...any type of proprioception will probably help.


He may actually stop stepping on toys if he gets the input in a variety of "movement" activities.

He had a trampoline but jumped so much he broke it, and I got a good one. Also, he may have inflamed a joint in his ankle as well by jumping so much, his pediatrician wants us to see an orthopedist . He is a jumper, so now that he has no tramp, he jumps in place when he's excited about something, or really into something.

He likes when I squeeze the bottoms of his feet and he's always barefoot indoors. His EI therapists will also squeeze his feet during his sessions while they're playing. I just looked up the bilbo, he would love that!

Would you mind explaining movement activities? Is it as simple as it sounds like running and dancing, etc? Or different than that?

I can see how the trampoline could break, it amazes me how much my dd can jump :)

We also have a 'bouncing" house thing, that I use only indoors.

As far as movement, I just throw on a cd that gives some sort of 'direction of movement'. I like Greg and Steve, or Patty Shukla, and this other guy named Ronno. The songs often tell the children to move quickly, then slowly, to jump, to sit, to touch body parts, and other "spatial' type activities. My dd's auditory processing is so much better through music.
