How do you get your child to stop needing pull ups?

I mean I really do not know what to do. My first son was potty trained at 2.5 and never even used them.

My second son is SUCH a deep sleeper! He does NOT wake up. He just started kindergarten! What do I do. I tried to not use them and just had to clean the bed constantly but it didnt help. Even when hes wet he doesnt wake up. I am so tired of PEEEEEE!

HELP! I think my 2 year old daughter will be night time potty trained before him! LOL

ETA: He just wears pull ups at night in bed.

My son is 3.5 and was only recently potty trained but for us the overnight training happend at the same time as daytime training. We knew he could do it & we waited until he WANTED to. We started out by waking him 1/2 way through the night. My friend's son is 6 and he is a deep sleeper and he still needs pull-ups. The doctor said he could get an alarm to wake him when he starts to pee but only if they want it. Don't stress it. I know so many great kids who were either late to train or who still have issues at night.

overnights can be hard for deep sleepers and kids who are taller (they grow -and need to eat and drink more - faster than their bladders)

DS#1 needed overnights for a good year after daytime potty training. Sometimes it's out of their control and I was losing it with the constant laundry.

have you tried taking him to the bathroom during the night? With my oldest, I would put her on the potty before we went to bed. she practically slept through the whole thing but she'd go, and then wake up dry.

Just let him outgrow it.

My pediatrician told us that its normal for kids to wet the bed until as old as 12. But, that age 9, they will send you to a urologist if you insist.

DS was 7 when we finally bought the alarm thing for him. He still has accidents sometimes.

Hang in there..its a biological thing, not something you can "fix".

Re: How do you get your child to stop needing pull ups?

My older son was in pull ups at almost 5. Then we started getting him up around 11pm to go. He's such a deep sleeper he would stand there peeing still asleep. The ped said to make sure he actually woke up and was aware. We started doing that and I cant remember how long it took but it was not too long and we started not getting him up. He never got up, it's still very rare for him to get up in the night to do so, but he never wet the bed after. Some kids have other issues but it's rarely until they are at least 6 that the doctor will worry about it.

ETA: As you can see from the other replies, it's so much more common than you think. I know some of these things seem like they aren't but so many kid issues are, hope this helps. Chat Icon

Re: How do you get your child to stop needing pull ups?

My son just turned 4 and he is still in pull ups at night. He was daytime potty trained at 3.

He, like yours, sleeps so deeply that he can have an accident and be completely soaked and not wake up. I tried going cold turkey and was honestly washing sheets every day. So we went back to pull ups.

I have tried waking him up, but we are now having sleep issues with him, so I am hesitant to start trying to wake him to go potty because he's giving us a hard time about going back to bed.

I am going to ask the ped at his 4 year well visit in a couple of weeks. Hugs to you! Hang in there!
