I posted on the other thread.

I find it useless and unnecessary. I am not high risk and neither is my husband or child. It does not prevent the flu, just the severity of it. And then, only if the strain you get is the one you got in the shot and even then there’s still a chance of it being just as bad as if you didn’t get a shot.

This exactly. I don't have an "irrational fear" of vaccines. If I get a vaccine, I want it to actually prevent the illness.

You don't need to do research to see something "bad" about the flu shot. Just look at the product insert or the list of ingredients and side effects from the CDC. It's not a clear cut decision either way - there are positives and negatives on both sides. But, the fact that vaccines can have very dangerous and deadly side effects is very well known. The fact that they contain questionable and controversial ingredients is very well know.

Considering the CDC and other major academic medical societies recommend the flu shot I fail to see how it's not a clear cut decision. Please give data to back up the "questionable and controversial ingredients" from real medical sources....

I understad you are in the medical profession, but come on! You really think the CDC exists as ONLY a protector of the citizens of the U.S. ? When so many government agencies have been swayed and influenced by big business? You really think that there is no way MONEY could be a factor in this advisory?

As far as ingerdients:

How about formaldehyde?
Mecury and mercury by-products?

Now as I said in previous posts, I would give my children the vaccine if they were in a risk pool-asthma, breathing issues etc. But the fact that I have healthy children with no risk factors who are not in school AND giving them this shot is not nearly a guarantee that they won't get the flu I am comfortable with my decision.

FTR-my kids are fully vaccinated except the MMR which we will probably give around 3. I refused Hep B in the hospital which I won't get into here, but other than that they have been vaccinated on the schedule my husband and I feel is appropriate. No more than 1 shot at a time(besides for one which was a combo) and we spread the vaccines out over months so their body has time to elimnate/deal with by products.

Re: why do you decline the flu shot?

From what I understand (I need to find the data on this but at work so no time to look up) drug companies make A LOT more money by creating drugs (esp those expensive cancer drugs) than vaccines. In fact, that's why only a few companies make vaccines. Obviously, it's some what profitable or they would not make them.

I think the key is to look at what doctors do for their own children. 99+% of doctors that I know vaccinate their own kids on schedule.

As far as the formaldehyde, themerisol, and mercury. Please cite me a study in a major peer reviewed medical journal that has shown that any of these chemicals have caused harm in the quantities that they exist in vaccines.

Fail to see why we should blindly follow any government agencies, especially the CDC and FDA

They may have not, and I, also am working, so do not have time to search for some. I will do some research over the weekend.

Even is it is tiny trace amounts I still don't want it in my childs body, especially since they may still get the flu!

Re: why do you decline the flu shot?

A tad over zealous of a site if you ask me but if you get past the silent screaming and fist pumping, some of this information is relevant.
One of many sites, I'm sure
Point is, there is research out there. Just about as much on both sides of the fence.

For me the only diff is the pro side has federal backing and the idea of "it was always done this way" and the anti shot side has to battle the idea of just saying no in the masses of yes.

I'm not making a stand, just decided for my family, no thank you. In this I am silently walking away from the issue. Its odd that it only comes up with OTHER people want to question my own reasoning when in reality nothing I say will convince them I'm right, even tho I'm not saying they are wrong.

I am not 'irrational'

My daughter is vaccinated, even with the new Prevnar 13 no less, but no flu shot.

Re: why do you decline the flu shot?

I've never had the flu shot.... nor have I had the flu.

I see no reason for DD to get the flu shot... I personally believe she's too young anyway.

I don't care who thinks I have an irrational fear of vaccinations. I actually just don't care what anyone thinks about it. Bottom line is that it's my decision for me and my family.
But I do laugh at you... Chat Icon Chat Icon

Our entire family gets their flu shots every year. I think that a lot of people choose not to get the shots because they have an irrational fear of vaccinations in general.

That is the most ridiculous statement.

Actually it is a completely ignorant statement obviously posted by someone who has no information at all on vaccines in general and specifically the flu vaccine. That is why a family chat board is not the best place to do your "research" on this issue, honestly. Myself, we do not get the flu shot. No irrational fears here Chat Icon

Here are just some of my many reasons ( I actually cut and pasted this from a thread I responded to like 3 yrs ago LOL):

1. My Aunt died from a reaction to a flu shot.
2. Studies have shown in recent years that the flu shot in this age group has not reduced hospital visits and doctor visits for the flu.
3. You can still get the flu. In fact, last year, DS had just started preschool and we did not get the shot. Well, two kids in his class that got the shot were out of school WITH THE FLU for 2 wks! And, their families as well (also got the shot).
4. My DS has had reactions to all live virus shots he has received and my DD has not yet received any live virus shots.
5. The vaccine contains sooooo many chemicals and "junk" - to me it is not worth it since the benefits are just not that clear to me. I honestly don't really see too much if any proof that the benefits of this shot are even tangible. I think dying from the Flu is probably just as rare and dying from a reaction to the flu vaccine. I BF'd my DS and DD, give them all organic foods, etc etc. so why am I going to contaminate their for what I see as no real benefit.

The flu shot is no longer a live virus. Only the nasal one is. That is only given to kids over 8. People die everyday from the flu and it is 100 percent preventable. There is proof that it works and prevents diseases and hospitalizations in medical journals.

With that said I believe it is everyone's right to deiced what they want to do. My family will be getting the flu shot this season.

I edited my post b/c I meant to write that DS has had reactions to most shots and all live virus shots.

The flu is not 100 percent preventable. That is just not true. If the flu shot guaranteed no flu this would be a different discussion entirely. There is also proof in medical journals that it does not always work and does not always work in this age range.

Sorry I meant to write it isn't 100 percent preventable but the shot helps. As for the shot not working with this age range which are you referring too? It doesn't work with kids younger then 6 months and that's why they don't give it to them.

The nasal flu is atually given to ages 3 and up.

You are right! I just asked my husband again. I miss heard him when we were talking about this originally.

My husband is a pediatrician and we vaccinate our son the way his dr. says to do so...

Re: why do you decline the flu shot?

I got it with both my previous pregnancies (ie only time I've ever taken the shot) because I have asthma....and I got the full-blown flu both of those times.

First time wasn't so bad, doc gave me some pregnancy-safe antibiotics and I took time off from work.

Second time was scary as hell. I had a 22-mo old and a 9wk old at home -- was hospitalized with 104F fever and was quarantined from my DCs for several days.

For me, I think I get the flu from the flu shot and this time I'll take my chances. I know people say that isn't true but flame away.
