Low Platelets
I went to my hematologist today, due to my anemia and she advised me my RBC is going up, but my platelets level is going down to 120.
She said I could be coming down with a cold/infection.
Now, I'm driving myself crazy on Google.
I have my 36 week appt. tomorrow, but do you think I should notify my OB today?
Any experience would be greatly appreciated.
TIA

Re: Low Platelets
i would let ob know, just in case. it is most likely related to lovenox/heparin. are you on any of these drugs? they are supposed to monitor you closely, esp on heparin and since you are 36w, to make sure platelets do not drop too low.

Re: Low Platelets
I've been on Lovenox up until this week they switched me to heparin, but they told me they don't monitor you on Heparin, like they do with Lovenox.
I'm going to question it tomorrow, because I think the office is closed now.
Thank you so much. It really makes sense, that it could be from the Heparin.

Re: Low Platelets
it is DEFINETELY from heparin. one of the known side effects of hepain is the drop in platelets. they must monitor you closely. i am on lovenox now ( 29w) and my ob does not want to transfer me on heparin b/c of these common side effects. i am not sure what to do myself once i reach 36w.
good luck! and pls, stay on top of them!

Re: Low Platelets
I came across HELLP syndrome too, it's extremely scary, but my blood pressure has been great.
I called my OB's office to let them know and they said I need to discuss it with my MFM doctor. I really don't like this office and wish I could change doctor's.
Thank you again!!! I'm hoping that it is just from the heparin.
Good Luck to you!!!

Re: Low Platelets
i had HELLP syndrome. it is absolutely NO joke. i had to deliver at 33w1d when i developed it.
HELLP is a combo of things though. worse than the low platelets is the high liver enzymes which can put you into liver failure. by the time i delivered my platelets were in the 80s and they went down to the 20s after my c-section because i lost a ton of blood. my liver enzymes were up in the 300s and it caused bad epigastric pain.
low platelets alone isnt an immediate cause for concern if you are on heparin or lovenox. i was on heparin at the time i developed HELLP because i was already on hospital bedrest for pre-eclampsia.
good luck!!! FM if you have any questions.

Re: Low Platelets
i had low platelets with my first pregnancy, gestational thrombosidopenia (sp). they discovered it late in my pregnancy & i was monitored very closely. it fluctuated every day. im sure they will watch you throughout.

Thank you so much! Hopefully they continue to watch it. I can't wait to go tomorrow to the doctor.
What was the main symptom of HELLP?

Re: Low Platelets
i "think" it is a combo of Preeclampsia and low platelets. But def Preeclampsia is a big part of it.

for me i was already in the hospital and i felt fine. they were monitoring my BP which was ever so slowly rising but i had significant protein in my urine which along with major swelling is what put me in the hospital for pre-eclampsia to begin with. they were going to keep me there and monitor me until delivery which we were hoping would be around 36 weeks. but 5 days after being admitted i woke up in the middle of the night with terrible pain under my ribs and around my back. it started out like heartburn but several hours later it was a throbbing pain that was so bad i was unable to sleep or get comfortable. its called epigastric pain. that was the signal to run my bloodwork which showed HELLP. i think HELLP might be a complication of pre-eclampsia, im not 100% sure if one would develop HELLP without developing pre-e first. i do know that if you have a pre-existing blood clotting issue then you are more prone to pre-e or HELLP.

Re: Low Platelets
My platelets dropped throughout pregnancy. And were pretty low at 35 weeks... but I ended up going into labor at 36 weeks, so they didn't really get to do much about it beforehand.
They took my blood a lot during labor, and I ended up getting an epi b/c all of my other numbers checked out. After labor they dropped down to 72 (2 days later). But by 5 days after labor, they were back in the normal range. It was odd. Hopefully everything works out for you!

Re: Low Platelets
I developed ITP , they think during my pregnancy. Its an autoimmune disorder where my spleen attacks and destroys my platelets. I have been monitored for the past 3 years since I had my DD. Since its autoimmune , they can't say 100% that pregnancy caused it, there are other causes. But pregnancy is thought to be a cause. It may never go away or one day I can just suddenly go into remission, who knows.

Thank you so much for explaining it to me. I'm really clueless when it comes to stuff like this. I contacted my MFM doctor today and waiting for his call back, because I rather be on the safe side and catch it.
Thank you all for the info.
