Have you heard of nannies drugging/sedating children? Am I being overly suspicious?
We are trying out a nanny who is too good to be true. Today was open house at 2yo son's preschool. DH and I were out of the house for 1.5 hours (left at 6:30pm and came home at 8:05pm). This was the FIRST time we've used a non-family babysitter ever. I expected to come home to 2 very tired crying kids. Instead both kids are bathed and fast asleep. This is beyond strange in our house! We usually start bedtime routine around 8. 2yo DS usually needs to be read books for over an hour. The baby (6m old) has been very fussy around bedtime (teething?). Both kids also were asleep downstairs in the living room. I came home to older DS sleeping on the couch and the baby sleeping in the bouncer. Both boys NEVER sleep in these places. They never sleep in the living room. DH and I both had the same thought, "the nanny must have drugged our children." I carried older son upstairs and he didn't wake up. Also very odd! He takes every opportunity NOT to sleep. Bedtime is unfortunately chaotic at our house. Usually DH rocks crying baby to sleep and I read stories to older DS. If I'm home alone, it's a mix of both kids crying for my attention. This usually lasts well past 9 until both kids fall asleep exhausted. I just can't understand how a relative stranger (kids do know her because I've used her as a mother's helper on weekends when DH was away) could put both boys to sleep in 1.5 hours that we are gone.
Am I being paranoid or do I have the right to be suspicious?
Is she just super nanny?
DH wants to install nanny cams.

DH and I try to get out either alone or with friends, once every 2 weeks, and we rotate between 3 different babysitters from our daycare. All 3 kids are ALWAYS asleep by 8PM for the sitter, for us it's more like 9:30- kids usually behave differently for their parents than they do for a sitter.

I've heard a few horror stories, not just one. 
Everyone I know, in person, who has a nanny/sitter has cams. I also know a few people that installed GPS on the stroller.
One mom told me she only found out, because she found a weird pink stain on her daughters clothes. She added a cam to the kitchen and caught the nanny in the act.
but I don't know anything about how DS would react with a stranger, or what to expect, he's pretty much the same or worse in terms of sleeping when I leave him with my mom or mil.

I wouldn't be suspicious if just one of the boys were sleeping. It's just beyond strange that both boys were fast asleep by 8pm. We were only gone for 1.5 hours!!!

Older son just doesn't like to sleep. He has been fighting his nap BIG time. I wouldn't think anything if he skipped his nap today but he had a great 2 hour nap this afternoon.
Older DS usually gets super hyper when he is overtired. That is what usually happens when a family member watches him. He doesn't sleep for them. He plays with them.
Younger DS is just fussy in the late afternoon/early evening. It usually takes us MULTIPLE times of putting him in the crib and him waking up crying for him to finally go down for the night.

I used to babysit a 2.5yo and 1yo and they always napped for me. Everyday. The mother couldnt believe it, they always gave her the hardest time and never fell asleep. Kids are just different without their parents. That was my experience and my opinion.

That sounds very suspicious. I would have asked her, how did you m anage that b/c that would never happen in a millionyears for us?
I worry about this when my dogs go to the groomers (I have heard drugging stories at groomers). I would be extremely concerned about my child, you def need to look into this.

I hope this is the case.
It is just so weird that BOTH boys were asleep.
Older DS does listen very well to his teachers at school. In general, he listens to others. He is always testing his boundaries to the limits with me.

Honestly, as a former nanny and a now mom, I can tell you that kids just have a way of resisting sleep for their parents that they just don't bother with for the babysitter! It would happen to me when I was a nanny, where the parents just could not understand how I got them to sleep when they couldn't. It was simple, it was work to me, so I was systematic about it and my bag of tricks was new to them. As a mom, I get worn down all day and stuck in the rut of bedtime problems and so it's not so easy. Plus, my kids, even as infants just KNEW that they could wear me down at some point.
So I highly doubt the babysitter drugged your kids. Is it impossible? No, but I'm going to lean more towards her being a good babysitter with some tricks up her sleeve that have nothing to do with drugging your children.

I am a very suspicious mom and always had a camera and always had someone follow a new nanny a few times, but I absolutely agree with that statement. Kids behave diferently with sitters/gradparents/aunts, etc than they do wth parents. Unfortunatelly, by "differently" I mean "better'!

what are they using to knock them out?
that's terrible that someone you know caught that happening!!!!!
I used to worry about this with my cats (long haired cats) that get baths and groomed...

O.M.G. this is so scary to even think about! The thought never even crossed my mind that someone would do this. To the above poster with the pink stain story - the nanny was in the act of drugging the kid? WIth what? Holy cow  I was paranoid about leaving my kids with strangers before now  Also, not sure nanny cams would even stop this 100%.
To the OP - when you left the nanny - what was there to do in that time? Was the nanny supposed to feed them etc. or were they all ready for bed just hadn't started the routine? Is your DS just turned 2 or over 2.5? If 2.5 or over I would DEFINITELY start asking some probing questions he should be able to tell you some of what went on .  So scary! But, I am sure they are fine! It would be a REAL NUT that would do something like this I would think

DS is 2.5yo. I am definitely going to be asking him a lot of questions tomorrow morning.
We just finished eating dinner when we left. I think we finished eating dinner around 6:15. I started doing puzzles with DS on the floor, went up to get ready around 6:20. Left the house around 6:30.
There was nothing left to do. I guess she could have started getting them ready for bed right away.
I loved this woman when I met her. We have used her 4 days as a mother's helper. She was fantastic. I was always home and she never put the boys to sleep. I have no reason not to trust her.

yes, someone had told them that it might be benedryl, since nannies in our hood are known to do this. So she put a cam in their kitchen and caught nanny opening bottles and squirting something inside. She put cams in every single room.
They have a nanny blacklist, the board is a parenting board from my hood. Most are working moms who hire nannies. They have a black list of "bad nannies" going with stories, its terrible, makes me what to cry I can't even read it.
The biggest debate there these days is ... "do you give your nanny any privacy, do you put cam in her room where she dresses, in the bathroom?" The consensus is put it and don't tell them. I don't know who to feel more bad for the nannies or the babies.

But what you describe (OP) sounds suspicious. Did you ask her how she did it? How old is she? You mentioned you used her as a mothers helper, which makes me think teen, but she is a nanny which makes me think 20's.
Personally I would not have a nanny without having cameras.

Personally I would not have a nanny without having cameras.
She is a 50yo professional nanny.
I was just home while she was there with me. We were basically testing her out to hire her as a nanny. She cooks, cleans and is great with the kids.
I work part time, almost full time. The plan was to hire her full time while I work part time. When I'm home, she could help with cleaning and cooking.

Did you ask her how she got the kids to sleep? With that much experience maybe she is like Mary Poppins or something 
My gut says who would do that on their first time alone with the kids, but the suspicious half of my brain says maybe she wanted to impress you and did give them something. Does your older child give a hard time with medicine? Did he drink anything before bed? I know it is a long shot, but are there any dirty cups around, maybe they would smell like medicine? Any paper towls in the garbage with a medicine stain?

I was putting away the bottles the nanny washed this morning and there was a medicine dropper in the mix and I wondered why it was there. Now I am all nervous! I had a cam but it was SO obvious I sent it back and can't find one in a normal price range that I like. Why would anyone put a clock in their kitchen - I just think it is so obvious, and so the nanny will do it outside the kitchen. IDK - it is so hard to leave the baby with anyone unknown :(

As a SAHM I've chatted with a LOT of nannies over the years at playgrounds, classes, etc. One time this one nanny I was friendly with told me she does this occasionally (use Benadryl), and her other nanny friends she knew in the area all did it too! I was totally floored, first that she's telling me everyone does it, and second that she told me about it so nonchalantly, like it was no biggie.
Now Benadryl is pretty harmless stuff, so it's not like they're giving the kids a truly dangerous substance. But still!!!! I would be livid if I found out the nanny was using this stuff!!!
You seriously can't trust people. It's horrible.

I would go ballisitic. I would pursue legal action if I could if I found out someone did this to my child.
