Epidural steroid injections, neck and back.....would you take sedation
They are giving me a choice. I will be getting a series of them. I am inclined to stay awake for the ones in my neck but not for the low back. They will not be done at the same time. I had more minor injections like nerve blocks and the ones in the low back aways scared me.
Wish me luck. I have been dealing with multiple herniated disks, additional bulging disks with nerve root compression and an annular tear and I have tried many therapies.
This really gives me an understanding of what my clients go through. Thankfully I was able to get a ton of work done before my first injection & they say I just have to rest until the next morning.
Please advise if you have had epidural steroid injections with or without sedation.

Thanks. I know I owe you an update on a bunch of things, Barbara.
My first neck one was done today and I did not take sedation but they opened a line for meds. in case my heart rate flared up b/c I have a history of heart rate & heart rhythm issues. There was a heart rate issue with the epidural when I had my son. I will need at least 2 injections in my neck and 2 in the low back and they will not do both on the same day. I had no issues at all today and the open line was not used! It was so quick but I am MUCH more nervous for the injections in my low back. I might take a light sedation for the low back injections. I am in a lot of pain & that's why I post less. My time in a sitting position is limited. I am even starting to use a dictation service for my writing for work so I can move around if necessary while I write.

If you have the option to have sedation and you're nervous about the lower back injections, I wouldn't hesitate to take it. That's what it's there for -- don't torture yourself.

Re: Epidural steroid injections, neck and back.....would you take sedation
I've had both. 3 lumbar and 2 cervical done. And i can honestly say the cervical were much more painful than the lumbar. the doc that did all my injections uses lidocaine with the lumbar epidural so it really wasn't painful at all. actually quite easy. no lidocaine on the cervical and those were not pleasant.
oh, and after all of that, i still had 2 lumbar microdisectomies, with laminectomies. and i am going for a 2 level cervical fusion in my neck on monday.
i've been dealing with this for close to 2 years now between the neck and lower back. if you have any questions feel free to PM me. i'll be at the hospital tomorrow for the pre-surgical testing.

Thank you. I may want to FM you some questions. I hope your next procedure goes well. I am trying so hard to avoid surgery but we'll see. However, I had a friend who had a microdiscectomy and he has been pain free for about a year. This was someone who was in so much pain that at one point he was not getting up to go to the bathroom his mom came over to help him. Then he walked out of his surgery and never looked back!!!! I guess he only had an issue at one level in the lumbar spine. I am learning about how tough this is and I hope you get more relief!!!!!! I have clients with all sorts of back problems and I just never thought that I'd have similar issues. Now that I get to see first hand the procedures that I read about in their medical records, it's sort of interesting--- if only I did not have pain. Please keep us posted about how the surgery goes.

Before my spinal surgery, I tried epi steroid injections several times and I always took the sedation!
Good luck! Hope they help you feel better
