Community Service for an entire school?
My school just began the Covey 7 Habits of Happy kids.
We are looking into community service or more so community projects the kid scan do.
Anyone ever hear of this? Or even just something some kids could do?
We discussed doing things for nursing homes, etc.. but need other ideas
TIA

Re: Community Service for an entire school?
I work with children with special needs and children who are ecoconomically disadvantaged. In the past schools have done food/ item drives for us, come in and sang songs or did short plays. We had a kindergarten class at one time write to us about what kindergarten is like to get the preschoolers ready.

Re: Community Service for an entire school?
I've organized card drives for the holidays. For Thanksgiving we made cards to give out to a homeless shelter to set on the tables for their Thanksgiving dinner, and we do holiday & Valentine cards for veterans. I also organized a "Souper Bowl" food drive the week before the Super Bowl. We picked a charity & left a coin bucket out all year by the cash register in the lunch room and made a quick $100+ to donate.

This sounds fabulous! I'd love to do this in my school! How did you get started?

Re: Community Service for an entire school?
King Arthur Flour has a program where they supply bread making supplies and an instructor. The kids learn how to make bread and are supposed to make 2 loaves over the weekend. One for home, one for a local soup kitchen.
It was so cute, actually very meaningful to the kids and I think King Arthur Flour really did all of the leg work.

Peenies for Peace?
In my school, we ask families to assemble Valentine bags, each with a book & some extras & they are delivered to area preschools that serve families in need.

Community clean up. Contact the town and have kids pick up trash/leaves.

Re: Community Service for an entire school?
Sometimes we turn things into a competition to help get the whole school involved. For example, do a food drive and the class who collects the most gets a pizza party. You could do winter coats also.
A different idea is to get involved with Ronald McDonald House or another specific charity. The kids can collect toiletries and other items on their wish list. They can also bring in baked goods to bring over for the families staying there.

Re: Community Service for an entire school?
I am currently working with students in my school. I needed a motivating factor as well, so I asked my daughter and she told me that we should do the Friends For Change by Disney. I divided up students into groups and assigned them or they worked together to come up with volunteer service that they wanted to do. Some are working with beaches and others with parks.
Here is the information about the Friends for Change: Friends for Change HTH
