You can never be sure. Any allergist will tell you that there is no real hypoallergenic dog. And any dog that may not cause reactions in some will cause reactions in others.
I agree with this! All dogs have fur not hair anyway. Also, the part that causes the allergic reactions is from the skin and not actually from the fur. If the skin gets dry and flakes it creates dander. Allergens from a dog are typically in their saliva and their skin. As long as you keep them washed and their skin isn't dry, it shouldn't be a problem.
My husband is highly allergic to dogs and we have a Pomeranian, which is known for shedding. He is totally fine around her and he only has a reaction if she licks him and he touches his face. It's also the same for any other dog he encounters. As long as he makes sure to wash his hands after touching the dog, he is fine.

Yes, I agree. My allergist told me the same. He said to clean often, buy an air purifier and wash hands and he thinks DS will be okay.

Re: Hypo allergenic dog??
I recommend the havanese but I'm also biased because I have two. They're hypoallergenic and great with kids. Feel free to FM me if you have any specific questions for the breed.

Re: Hypo allergenic dog??
Growing up my gf had a miniature poodle because her dad had allergies. The dad never had an issue.

You definitely should go the route of a local breeder only, in case your DS is allergic. In that case and you could not keep the dog, the breeder would agree to take back their own dog and find him/her a new home. Do not buy from a puppy store, please, esp in this case b/c then it will be on you to find a new home for the puppy in the event of bad allergies.
Also go to a reputable local breeder so you can also be sure of exactly what breed of a dog you are getting.
Or of course, a rescue is fine if they agree to take the dog back in the event you cannot keep him/her. But I believe all rescues do that. Definitely find this out when adopting/buying a dog, in this case b/c as best as you try to find a dog that your DS will not have a reaction to, you cannot be 100% sure.
Where are you located?

I would definitely be careful with a "doodle" or any combination where you have one hypoallergenic dog and one that's not. If you're up for a pretty energetic dog, I definitely suggest Portuguese Water Dogs. They are amazing with kids, so much fun, super cuddly (as you can see below) and really smart.

they are hypoallergenic?? Very very cute!!!
yeah, that's the breed the president got because the girls have pet allergies--def hypoallergenic.

Re: Hypo allergenic dog??
I would strongly recommend that whatever breeder/breed you decide on you have your child spend a few hours in the breeder's house with their dogs to see if they have a reaction. Otherwise there can be heartbreak later on for everyone involved.

Re: Hypo allergenic dog??
yea that's exactly why I want to go through a breeder. They are going to let us spend time with the breed to see if it's a match.

Make sure it is long before you would even take puppy home. I think it's better if they aren't born yet.

What do you mean? Picking from an unborn litter? They are offering from a few and I didn't know people wait for litters like this! Serious business!

No, I mean spend some time in the breeder's house, even if they don't currently have a litter. Just have your child spend some time in the house where the breed of dog you are interested in purchasing live.

I waited for a litter to be born. But I also knew I wanted a cream or white puppy.

Re: Hypo allergenic dog??
according to my allergist - there really isn't such thing as a true hypoallergenic breed. That being said - we have a goldendoodle who is more poodle than golden. My brother in law, who has severe allergies, isn't bothered by her. My MIL has a slight pet allergy and she bothers her a lot....

Re: Hypo allergenic dog??
the problem with these cross breeds are for the most part, they're not real breeds. it's just a mutt so you won't be able to find a legit breeder :-/ maybe try a maltese or a shih tzu or bichon. these are pure breds and are for the most part "hypo allergenic" but do know, there are no such thing as a hypo allergenic dog. it's their saliva that you will be allergic to

Re: Hypo allergenic dog??
also anyone that charges $2500 for a dog isn't a real breeder. probably a backyard breeder. reputable breeders don't breed to make a ton of money. that's a pretty good indicator if they're reputable or not. also you should be able to go to their place, see where the dogs live, ask how they play, if they interact with all sorts of people (older, kids, babies, different races, etc) what their daily routine is, what they feed them, how many litters a year they have, ask for their AKC papers of the parents. also anyone that has a "christmas litter" is bad news. most breeders will not breed around this time of year because too many people on impulse want dogs. biggest time of year of dogs that are returned or are left in shelters. make sure everyone is 100% on board with this too. that you have someone to exercise the dog and let it out during the day if you work, etc hope this helps
