Pediatrician Dilemma? Help!! Smithtown area...
Hi Ladies-
I'm about to pull my hair out. I am stressing about pediatricians way too much lately. I"m currently 28 weeks pregnant. I met with Dr. Ancona at Branch Ped, Mid Suffolk Pediatrics, and spoke to Dr. Valmassoi at Smithtown Pediatrics.
I didn't realize what I'm looking for in a Dr is so difficult to offer.....
Basically i'm looking for a dr's office open in the evening& Saturdays, and willing to alter the vaccination schedule.
Dr. Valmassoi seemed awesome when we spoke but she is not willing to spread out the vaccinations. I don't want my newborn to be bombarded with shots. (I don't understand why a newborn needs a hepititus B vaccine in the hospital. It's a sex. transmitted disease/needle transmission- when asked, using this as an example the dr's are never able to give me a clear answer).
Dr. Ancona seemed more willing but I didn't get the vib that he'd be 100% on my side. He seemed stuck in his ways.
Mid Suffolk Ped had me meet with the office manager who just yes'd me to death on everything. My friend says they aren't willing to alter the vaccination schedule.
Can ANYONE out there help me out??? I'm getting a little desperate.

You can deny the hep b at the hospital. I didn't have that issue and I use Mid-Suffolk. They do no waiver in their vaccination schedule but I follow it. I will say though that if DC is sick they will not insist on vaccinating. DS who is 16 months just got his 12 month shots at his 15 month appt because he had an ear infection for his 12 month visit.
I love all the doctors and their hours are awesome. I have called on a sunday and gotten an appointment that day.

I would recommend Dr. Rubin in Mineola but I think that is prob. too far for you.
Hep B is routinely given at birth if the mother is infected with Hep B, otherwise you can safely delay until 2-6mths.

Interesting- what is a no waiver form?

We live in Smithtown too and our pediatrician is in Stony Brook right near the movie theater. If thats not too far and you want the info FM me. They follow the cdc vaccination schedule but will postpone some and discuss it with you. They had no prob with me not giving the twins the Hep B in the hospital. I put it off for a few months. As for weekends, they only have hours for half the day on Saturday.

I use a ped in Smithtown and was given the option of having the Hep B in the hospital, which I declined for the same reasons....

We use Dr Ancona and I do not believe that he will alter the schedule very much.

I use Dr. Ancona (Keith) and he is very flexible with the vaccines. He left it up to me and only said that we will have to work on making sure they have what they need for school. My DD just got her MMR now at 3.5.

I just wanted to say I use Dr Valmassoi, She is wonderful. The whole practice will not alter the vaccination schedule, but they are beyond accommodating in getting appts (even when I walked in after DS fell). Have you tried some in Commack, a friend uses Dr Kaplan/Brown (cant remember the practice name)

Mid-Suffolk pediatrics does not offer a alternate vaccine schedule. You sign the waiverform when you decline a shot but you are asked to leave the pracice after that visit.

I agree with this. I am in Nesconset and I am pretty sure we use the same practice. I love all of the doctors!

Re: Pediatrician Dilemma? Help!! Smithtown area...
I have used Mid Suffolk since DD#1 was born. They will not alter their vaccine sched. We have only been allowed to delay a vaccine if one of my daughters was sick at the time of their well visit.
That being said I really like the office. We have never had a problem getting an appt. They are open 7 days a week.

We use Dr Valmassoi too and I really like her and the practice. But Ive have seem other Drs there that I don't like nearly as much!
Its never hard to get an appointment and they hardly ever make you wait more then a few minutes.
We didn't delay vaccinations though so I cant speak to that.

I was going to ask which Dr. Ancona you met with. The father, Richard, is definitely more set in his ways. The son, Keith, is more flexible. We have been going to Branch since my oldest was born in June 2007 and have nothing but positive things to say. We mostly saw Dr. Desanto before he moved to CT at the end of July. Now we see Dr. Mineo or Dr. Flynn. Dr. DeSanto literally saved my youngest sons life so I have very positive thoughts about the practice as a whole. We were able to delay some of the vaccinations by a few months.

If Huntington isnt too far for you, Dr. Siev at Huntington Medical Group is phenomenal. My DD is 15 months and has been seeing him since day one. Love him!

Dr Silzolski was the director of the neo natal unit at Stony Brook Hospital and te nicest man! I think he and his partner Dr Chernobilsky are great. They're old school and great with the babies. I've met with both. They are partners at Smithaven Pediatrics. 361-2121. I know Dr Chernobilsky will spread out the vaccines and he and Dr Silzolski are usually on the same page. I find the staff kind as well.
I met with Dr Ancona who didn't answer many questions when I was pregnant and met with him. He basically told me my main focus was to have the babies and then contact him. Dr Valmossi (or however you spell it) wouldn't meet with me would only speak over the phone, I wasn't crazy about her although many people rave about her here.
Good luck HTH !
