Broken Rib/Ribs?
I fell BAD yesterday in the shower (don't even ask...). My ribs slammed into the side of the tub. They are not bruised looking but I am in a decent amount of pain. It hurts to get in and out of the car, if I take a deep breath, coughing, sneezing etc. Could they be broken without having a bruise? I always thought if you broke a bone it bruised right away.

I broke a rib when I was about 12. I don't think I had any bruising, but I can't remember for sure. I do remember having pain when I took a deep breathe and feeling like I was going to die when I sneezed. My mom wound up taking me to the doctor because I flat out refused to sneeze for a day or 2 so she knew something was wrong (which leads me to believe that maybe I didn't have any bruising). I also don't think there was really anything to do for it except rest, some meds and they taped me up.

You prob need to have some x-rays done to be sure. I have seen pt's come to the ER in slight pain & have broken a rib. Hope you feel better.

when I got into a car accident I fractured them and it felt like when I breathed in like I swallowed salt water at the beach, it sounds like u badly bruised them or fractured them. They do not do anything for it but bound it for comfort but u should get a xray just in case.

Thank you everyone!!
I should have updated. I did go to the doctor and had xrays done. Nothing was broken -- just very bruised. It's actually been 2 weeks and they still hurt, but not quite as much. The radiologist actually said sometimes bruised ribs can hurt a lot more than broken ones. No more leaning out of the shower to grab a razor for me lol.

My mom broke a few, leaning over the arm rest center console thing in her old car. She was in crazy pain, with no bruising.
