Speech Language Pathologists

Sorry if this is long but just looking for some feedback as I am considering a career change. I have my BA in Speech Communications and always had the intent on persuing my Master in Speech Pathology but never did. I was content at my current job working as an assistant and just kind of lost thoughts of school. I am now considering going back for my Masters in SLP but can't afford to quit my full time job to do so. I am just looking for some insight from anyone who has been through the Master's program, is it even possible to complete this program while still working? Also, was it difficult to find a job in this field? I want to kick myself for waiting this long and now with a mortgage, it seems nearly impossible to go back but I don't want to have any regrets.

Any advice would be much appreciated!

I am not one, but work in the healthcare field with people who have TBI and it's hard to find them, especially ones who are willing to go to the home, so I would say it very much is an in demand field.

If you can figure out a way to make it work even if you have to be really tired for a couple of years, definitely go for it!

When I was in graduate school for my Master's, I also had to work, and my employer worked out a specialized schedule for me, that included evenings and weekends.

I work at a University and have some knowledge of the program. There are openings in this field so the amount of people applying are crazzy. Last year I know they got over 500 applications for the grad program and only took in 30 kids. It is very competitive to get into Speech Path for Grad School.

Thank you both so much for your responses! I have heard the grad programs are very competitive which was another concern. I am meeting with an advisor from a school next week to discuss my options so I guess I will have a better idea after that

Hi I replied on the other post too. I was able to work full time as a TA the first year of graduate school and then I was able to work the second year. I went full time to weekend program at Adelphi. I had no life for like two years but I am never too worried about work. Currently, I am an independent contractor. I basically specialize in pediatrics and I work at Catholic schools that need a SLP and at a group home with adolescent boys. I think the job field is pretty good. It is worth the sacrifice if you get into a program. I hope it helps. Feel free to FM me.

Do it!!! I'm a speech therapist...there are always jobs for this field. I know a lot of friends who worked full-time and went to grad school. It was tough, but I know ALL of them are SO glad they did it. Goodluck!
