Good place to retire on long island - east end?
sorry for all my "places to live" questions. my parents are at that age. Either east end of LI with lower taxes(taxes here in levittown are stupid!). or upstate?
so... where on long island - east end is good for retiring folks??

the best deal on Long island is Leisure Village in Ridge. Very easy to get to good shopping in Rocky Point or Riverhead. Super Affordable, small fixer upper condo units around $80,000. The community is really well kept, they have lots of amenties including a golf course. Many of my patients live in Leisure Village & they all love it.

Re: Good place to retire on long island - east end?
i think I gave the wrong impression. My parents want a house, not in a retirement community.
House with extra rooms for guests, acres of property, reasonable taxes...
not a 55+ community...

What is your idea of reasonable taxes. I live out east and my taxes are what I consider high(12,000). Also what do you mean by east end? Hampton's/north fork or eastern Suffolk----like around exit 64 etc. Its hard to answer without knowing the area you are considering and your budget for taxes

It's not "THAT" cheap out East as you may think. I looked at properties with 1+acres and it's about the same price (within $30K) to what Western Suffolk is on the North Shore) is.
For that size property, North Folk is about $500K+ MINIMUM with a small farm house type.

I really don't know anything about it personally, but a few years ago my parents were looking into this and they were looking specifically at Laurel. I'd never heard of the town before then, but my parents are realtors so they should have pretty good clue!

Re: Good place to retire on long island - east end?
I live on the North Fork full time, but there is definitely a large 2nd home market out here, as well as many retirees. I think you really can't go wrong with anywhere in Southold township, even parts of Riverhead are good (Aquebogue, Jamesport). It really depends on their price range and what they're looking for. Houses can range from the upper 200's to well into the millions. Are they looking for more of a farm house, or a house on the water? Looking to live within walking distance of a town? There's such a wide range of communities out here, it's hard to suggest a specific town without knowing what they're looking for.

Re: Good place to retire on long island - east end?
how about 400-500k, with taxes about 8K?
they'd be selling their house here in levittown and buying outright.
they have some savings to put towards it. they just got school tax increase of $500. 00 per year and that threw them over the edge... "why pay that with no kids in school district," is their attitude.
Eta: they like riverhead area. looked at some houses this weekend in mt Sinai, I think?

If I didn't have to work this is where I would live. The area is beautiful and the development is sooo nice!! IMO perfect for retirement.

Re: Good place to retire on long island - east end?
Also keep in mind access to doctors and a hospital. That's important as parents age.
Acres of property means upkeep, if it's not wooded. And out east in the Hamptons on the south fork, properties are very expensive. What could buy a nice house elsewhere, can not there, although prices are dropping.
Laurel, Ridge and Mt Sinai are lovely areas, as are some others near Riverhead and going east on the north fork. Have them do some driving around on the weekends to see what appeals to them. They are sure to find several areas they might like.
A call to Town Hall where ever they are interested in living would help them find out about taxes there. And any school bond issues coming up that might affect future taxes. Riverhead's voting on a big one today.
