Re: has anyone homeschooled due to illness ?
so many prayers to you Erica
I don't homeschool really...just preschool. For this reason-I have met a lot of homeschool families. In Charlotte, we have a place called The Homeschool Room. It is a store. My 4.5 year old takes Spanish classes there, so during that time I roam the store. There are so many resources. How to books. Lessons already done for you.
I know 2 other moms who homeschool because of asthma. first, I would recommend looking up homeschool laws for NY
When done correctly, these kids excel. Our homeschool friends are so much more advanced in studies then our public school friends.
let me know if you have any questions that i can pass on.

Call your school districts PPS/Special Ed office. They will tell you what you are entitled to.

Definitely call the district office because most likely the district will send a teacher to your home for a set number of hours each week (if you are comfortable with that).
My 2nd year of teaching we had a student with a similar diagnosis and I know teachers visited her on a regular basis.

Yes, the school will be able to send a teacher to the home.
Good luck, and like I said on the other thread, please please please let us know if there's anything we can do. I'm super-willing to help!!

Re: has anyone homeschooled due to illness ?
Thank you everyone. I used the wrong term...home instruction. Social worker came in today and explained a little and he takes care of it with the school district.
Im giving up my chair for the science fair, but im hoping he can participate.

Re: has anyone homeschooled due to illness ?
Although not NHL, my friend's son went through chemo, etc while he was in school.
She was back & forth to Sloan for a long time. If you're comfortable with the rest of the school knowing (parents), the amount of support she got from moms was so tremendous. The kids too. Making get well cards, etc. It was so uplifting to her son to know that he wasn't forgotten at school.
If you want, I can reach out to her for any helpful info she can offer.
Hang in there.

I was going to say that the school social worker will guide you.
Aside from that, if you need ANYTHING ~ materials, extra work to keep him busy, books, an ear to listen, snacks, meals, ANYTHING, just say the word. You know when I am at work I am not far from your house, and I can travel to wherever you need me to.

Re: has anyone homeschooled due to illness ?
My sister is a teacher in East Meadow, she worked with a girl who was home for months last year due to jaw reconstruction (she missed most of the year).
She was paid, by the district, to spend a certain amount of hours with her to keep her on track. It is something that should ABSOLUTELY be offered to you.
MANY, MANY prayers you you

Re: has anyone homeschooled due to illness ?
Home instruction works like this in my district. I provide the tutor with all my lesson plans. The tutor then goes to the student's house and does the lesson and has the student complete all necessary worksheets, activities, hw, quizzes, tests, etc. She then returns them to me and I grade them. My students on home instruction I believe get 2 hours a day.
