and I'm in love! I went shopping and there's so much food to choose from. How do I know what's good? I still want it to be afordable. She's fed purina one now.

Make sure there are no animal by-products or corn in the food. Usually going to a holistic section or store is best. When you switch be sure to mix in the new food with the old food slowly so the dogs tummy doesn't get upset.

If you want a basic food that is good for them, get Science Diet at Petco. That's what my dogs have always eaten.

I would keep him on whatever he's been on for a little while if possible and then slowly transition him over if you decide to change it.

One other piece of advice --- many people have told me that you want to look for good quality meat as the first ingredient. If the first ingredient is "meat by products" then it isn't a good quality food since that could be anything --- chicken claws, feathers, etc. Yuck.

Also corn can cause some health problems for dogs so you don't want it to be a corn-based food.

Our doctor recommended for affordability nothing that you could buy in a grocery store other then Iams --- which is readily available in most stores. If you read the ingredients they do have some by-products and corn in Iams, but it isn't the FIRST ingredient.

But it still costs just about as much as Purina but with a better quality of ingredients.

But other then Iams...there are a few other brands that are good on that list.

Switch the dog gradually. Start mixing in the new food little by little until he/she gets used to the taste of it. And then once you make the switch and the dog tolerates it fine, stick with whatever brand you chose. Dogs do best when they are on one brand consistently then when you are always changing!

Everyone makes their own decision for themselves and their pet. I don't criticize anyone else's choices but my thoughts on the sad state of pet food over the years has changed. If you're well informed and make your decision based on a variety of information and sources, then you're a leg up on people who base their decisions on marketing and packaging claims. I hope you find something that works well for you and your pup.
