Catholic Mom - First Holy Communion.

What age did or will your child make his / her first holy communion. What grade will they be in?

A friend of mine told me I could hold off on sending DD to religious Ed. until next year when she will be in First Grade and that she will make her communion in Second Grade. Then I met a mom at school today and she said her kindergarten daughter is taking religious ED this year as if she waited to start until next year she would not be able to maker her first holy until she was in third grade. They both belong to the same church.

Does anyone know if there are rules as to how many years of religious Ed. kids need to take before they can make their First holy communion?

Most children make it in second grade. I am not sure how much instruction they need before making it. My DS is in a Catholic school and had religion every day as a subject. They really just started focusing on it this year (second grade).

Re: Catholic Mom - First Holy Communion.

You need to call your church and find out their policy and how their religious ed program works.

In our church religious ed starts once a week at the rec center for an hour in 1st grade. They make their communion in the Spring of 2nd grade.

My Brother's church they do at-home catechism (sp?) for first grade, then religious ed and communion in the 2nd grade.

Every church is slightly different. Give them a call!

Re: Catholic Mom - First Holy Communion.

Thanks, I guess I will call. I am sort of afraid they will insist that I start DD now and I had kind of hoped to hold off on it until next year.....thanksChat Icon

In most cases, religious ed begins in first grade.

Communion is in 2nd grade.

Re: Catholic Mom - First Holy Communion.

In my church you can start religious ed classes as early as prek and kinger, BUT you only need to go for the 1st and 2nd grade to receive commuion.
