NYC DOE - what do you make of this?
I think I have a job offer in a high school in Brooklyn.
Well, I do, but there is a twist and I want to know if this sounds weird or not.
The school wants me to start Monday but they said that because it's all happening very fast, they would have to pay me as a day to day sub at first. They said this should last 1-2 weeks.
What I am not understanding is why can't I just be paid at normal teacher salary retroactive to my start date?
I think I would rather wait for the "right" pay than get less pay right away, KWIM? (Not that they are giving me the choice.)
Are they doing this because they need a body in the classroom but I'm not "approved" yet?
I did not expect this because I already have a DOE file number. (This is my third time being offered a DOE position; the first two fell through - one on my end, one on theirs.)
No one's pulling a fast one on me or anything....right?

My guess is that whoever you are replacing will be on the payroll until then and they can't pay two teachers full pay at the same time. That is what has happened in my school.

I was hired the day I interviewed when I worked for NYC (but that was 14 years ago) and started the next week and got full pay. On top of that an excessed teacher was sent for my spot, so there were 2 of us. (we team taught until the schedule was figured out)
But I don't doubt anything in NYC.

bingo. My Principal was telling me she would have to do this with whoever replaced me. I would just grin and bear it bc I would fear if I said something they might go with someone else, teaching jobs are few and far between these days. Congrats on the job

Re: NYC DOE - what do you make of this?
Granted, this was 1996 but I had a similar experience. I was hired in early November. There were, unsurprisingly, budget issues. I was hired as a day-to-day sub and was paid as such. The principal was fired not long after I arrived. I do recall money had to be moved but I don't recall specifics. The AP for administration did keep me abreast of all that was going on and I felt she was always honest with me. I went on the payroll after 3 months.
My understanding is that teachers who began with the DOE in September often aren't paid anything till November or so (which is disgraceful) so 1-2 weeks paid as a day to day may not be bad. But I would also introduce myself to the chapter leader ASAP and let him/her know what the deal is so it is not dragged out indefinitely.
