dog in mourning

Since my family dog (Buddy) died yesterday, DH brought our dog (Joey) to visit my family. They spent the whole day together and this was the first time Joey's been there without Buddy. When he came back, you could tell he was definitely depressed. Usually he's playful when he comes in, this time he went right to his cage. We did Facetime with some other family members (yes, he loves facetime lmao- usually gets all hyped up, tries to lick the screen etc) and he didnt want any part of it. I guess this is me being overly sensitive, maybe he was just tired from the excitement of going to grandma's house?

We definitely experienced it when our other family dog passed- Buddy mourned for months. Chat Icon Anyone have any experience with dogs in mourning?

Re: dog in mourning

Dogs can sense emotion like no other animal I've ever seen. They are a thousand times better at picking up on it than people are. I bet it's partly because you guys are upset, too. He can feel it and so he's sharing your emotions. I'm so sorry for your loss. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: dog in mourning

Chat Icon I do think animals can sense things like that and feel some sort of loss. My cat acted weird when my mom passed away. She stayed under the bed for a couple days, which was very unusual for her. I think she somehow knew. Chat Icon I hope your dog feels better soon! Chat Icon

Re: dog in mourning

I'm sorry for your loss :( When my mom's dog passed away my dog was very upset. We move in with them a month later to save for our house and my dog searched their house for months looking for their dog. It was very sad. When my sisters dog passed my dog was heartbroken. A little part of her died with my sisters dog. We had gotten them the same day and they grew up together. She has never been the same since. She is a happy dog but has been different since Roo passed. With my mom when they got a new puppy My doggie perked up a bit and enjoyed being a mommy to it. Her and the puppy (who is 4 now lol) still have a special connection.
