Titanic Memorial Cruise.

Has anyone heard about this?! I just heard about it on CNN. It will be on the 100th anniversary of the Titanic's voyage. It leaves from New York and stops at Halifax and then onto the location where the Titanic sank. There will be food/entertainment options like there were on the Titanic.

Link for more info.

Am I the only one who thinks this is weird and creepy?! Families of people who died on the Titanic seem to be excited to go on this cruise in memory of them. And I do get that it's in memory of them, but to go to the place where it sank seems creepy and morbid to me. Am I alone in this??

I thought about that, too, but I dunno. This seems weird to me. I've been on cruises and they are so fun and carefree, and it just seems wrong. Like it would be a somber cruise, but from the sound of it, it's not.

ETA: Actually, the itenerary online seems pretty somber. I didn't realize that about Halifax, I was wondering how it got included. The way the guy on CNN was describing it was bugging me out! Chat Icon

The Titanic fascinates me and I could watch documentaries on it for days and over and over again.

If I had money to burn, I could see finding it interesting. But I've also NEVER been on a cruise and don't have a lot of desire to go on one.

Ditto, im slightly obsessed with the Titanic... so maybe thats why i dont have a problem with it... its not as if they are trying to make it a disney cruise!

I could see Titanic enthusiasts want to go on this. I had a student who would love this.

It doesn't seem to be a party cruise, but about lectures and learning

Yeah, it looks more like that now that I'm reading about it on the website. The way the guy was describing it on CNN was like they were going to be having the hairiest legs competition poolside between learning about the Titanic. Chat Icon

It still creeps me out, though!

Re: Titanic Memorial Cruise.

Heard about this last year. its been planned forever

Creepy? Morbid?

No I find it neither. I think you can't understand the true meaning of it to them unless you've walked in their shoes so to speak. Others will find it distasteful even some of the family members themselves but I think if they find closure or even if they to feel that joy and righteousness of completing the trip their doomed family members did not, then good for them.

There's so much power in fullfilling a dream that I can see the draw of this.

Much as I got up one beautiful morning to go to work but never made it. Difference is I'd made the trip a hundred times before. For them it was their first trip out on such a magical journey. Now decades later their blood will finally complete the trip.

Yeah. I am very moved by it.

No not creepy or morbid at all.

I don't find it creepy at all. If I had $5,000 to blow I would go.

While I have enjoyed reading in the past about the Titanic, I don't think I would do this. I have to ask - for those who don't like the idea - how is it different than say going to gettysburg and touring and doing a re-enactment or going to yorkstown and doing the same thing?

this was a doomed voyage...so i don't think i would ever consider re-creating it no matter what it means. i wouldn't want to re-create a doomed air flight etc..so no, no way, i'd be scared something bad would happen but i'm chicken like that.

Well, honestly, I think that's kinda weird and creepy, too. JMO!

ETA: I don't think visiting the WTC site (or any other site) is creepy or morbid or strange, but something about almost re-enacting it gives me the heebie jeebies.

That's another thing- I feel like you're asking for something bad to happen. Though, of course, they are leaving from New York instead of travelling to New York so it's not the same route.

Unless the ship is made by the White Star Line, i probably wouldnt give it a second thought... there are plenty of ships that made the same voyage after the Titanic than never had a problem.
