pumping question
Do you eventually ever pump more then what they take? I've only been pumping for about a week now,but I consistently get 3 ounces total, nothing more. I've only given her BM from a bottle twice and she's taken the 3oz (one time left a little), so it's obviously how much she takes (for now).
But I don't know why I feel a little defeated, like I should be getting more, she's a month old now.
I'm consistent at doing it at about an hour after she eats but an hour before she eats again (usually 830am).
Should I be getting more?

Re: pumping question
I think that sounds about right. As she eats more, you will produce more. Try turning the pump up a bit, and pushing the milk out as you pump. Also try to relax, and eat and drink while you pump.
Try More Milk Plus pills - they really help my supply.
GL!

Re: pumping question
The best time for me was during her long stretch of sleep at night, I was able to pump 5/6 oz (she only ate 4oz). Also had to have the pump on the highest setting. Eating oatmeal also helped me produce a little more.

ITA with everything. More Milk Plus really helped me too.
You are feeding her AND pumping, so you are producing a lot! You have to figure the amount that you pump PLUS what she is eating daily. She is gaining weight at a good pace, so you might not even need the MMP!

Re: pumping question
I agree with what everyone said but want to add that at 7 months my DD can take 7 oz in a bottle, but when I pump Im lucky to get 3 oz. Im just not a good pumper (I have a good pump too). The pump just doesn't get as much from me as DD can...it never drains me...So don't think you don't have a good supply based on how much you are able to pump.

Totally agree too - the pump is not as effective as the baby at draining.
DD is also 7 months, and only takes 3-5 oz (usually 4 oz) bottles, so that makes it easier to pump for her, but I pump 4 times a day and get 3-5 ounces per pump, so it works out that I pump each day for the next day.
Massaging makes a big difference for me - I get a lot more milk that way.

Re: pumping question
I pump in the morning even when I am home. That's when I get the most. I think and increase started when DS was around three months old. I pump on average 9-10 ounces in the morning and he only takes 5. The two other times I pump during the day I usually get anywhere from 4-6 ounces.

yes! It will help a lot. Also make sure you pump for at least 20 minutes. Even if nothing is coming out, you will get a second let down.
Make sure you are feeding or pumping every 2-3 hours (3-4 over night)

Re: pumping question
DD is 5.5 months and EBF. Now that I'm back to work I've been pumping and I barely get enough for her. I only get 2 ounces at most from one boob and 3 ounces from the other. I'm pretty sure that she gets more milk when she nurses though.
With DS, I exclusively pumped and never had an issue with supply. I was always able to pump lots of milk.
so who knows

Re: pumping question
Yes, you should do massage or compression as you pump. There's no special technique; just push on the side of your boob as you're pumping. Hold for a couple of secs, then let go and push again. Try it on the top, on the other side, etc., and you'll see what spots really get the milk flowing. Doing that gives me an extra ounce or so probably.
You'll also notice different outputs at different times of day. If I pump early in the morning or after DD goes to sleep, I'll get 3 ounces per side in 15 minutes. If I pump at 2 in the afternoon, I might get 1.5 oz. total, and it won't have even been worth it for me to waste the time.

Re: pumping question
I would agree that you should at least do 20 minutes....I would always get a 2nd let down at the 20-22 min mark! Sometimes this 2nd letdown would yield a whole other ounce!!! I also can never get a good amount when I just let the pump do all the work..I do breast compressions/massages the whole 20 min while I pumped...This helped get the milk out!
But I agree with others that if you are EBF and pumping this sounds like a good amt! I would only get more if she or I missed a feeding! The pump is not a good indicator of how much your LO is getting!
Also drink lots and lots and LOTS of water. your diet for the day and water intake varies and will affect your pump output so that will vary depending on the time and the day!
I used Fenugreek and it seemed to help (3 pills 3 x a day) And I have heard more milk plus works - but never used it!
