Cord blood banking
Who is doing this? When I look at the major cord blood banking sites it seems like such a wonderful idea but when I look at independent research sites they make it seem like its unlikely we'd ever be able to use it! A lot of sites recommend donating it to the public so that a match can definitely take advantage of it. I am so confused! If you are doing it.... Can you please tell me how you came to the decision? I don't want this to cause drama any kind of way but I want to be as informed as possible before I make a decision. Thanks!

Re: Cord blood banking
It's a very personal decision. We're not banking cord blood. I would donate to a public bank, but my hospital doesn't participate.

I know. It definitely is! I guess I just don't feel very well informed and I feel like I don't know what sources to trust.. everywhere I look I read conflicting information.

Re: Cord blood banking
We are not doing it - the public banking system is where our cord blood will go... just like it did with DS.

Re: Cord blood banking
I banked with DC2 and will with this one too. We get reimbursed for it by the union, so it doesn't cost us anything. So it's a no brainer for us.

We banked with #1 and will be banking with #2. It was just something DH and I felt was important to do.

Re: Cord blood banking
We banked with ds #1 and will be using the same company to bank this time as well. For us it was a no brainer. - we have a terrible history w/blood cancers in our families. DH's mom passed away young from Lymphoma. My mom has Leukemia, her mom & brother passed from NH Lymphoma & my first cousin has a rare pre-Leukemic blood disorder. We selected the company that we did primarily because when we did our research 2+ years ago they had done the most successful transfers in each of the types of cancers that run strongly in our families. Knowing what we know about our families we can't in good conscience no do it

Re: Cord blood banking
We did A LOT of research and consulted with many professionals in order to educate ourselves. After all this work we STILL didn't know what the right thing for our familly was. I then spoke to my OB and after 2 minutes I decided we were doing it. She said she has seen first hand cord blood save 3 lives. She said to me it's an insurance policy. You g-d willing won't need it but if one day you did and didn't have it would I be ok with that. Would I be ok knowing that I either just didn't have the financial means to do it or felt either way I was ok without it. For us we spend money on so many "nice to have" things that we couldn't justify not buying this "policy". I couldn't live with myself if one day it might have helped but I didn't have it.
Just my personal journey on how my DH and I came to our decision. We did it with DD #1 and will be doing it again with #2. We went with CBR.

Re: Cord blood banking
We did nothing with DS' cord blood but, will be donating DC #2's blood (I would have for DS if I knew it was an option but, I don't think it was).

Re: Cord blood banking
We decided to bank it with Viacord. We went to the free info brunch at Villa lombardis on a sunday. It was very informative. We felt very strongly that we didnt want to regret not doing it. Its one of those things that you can not do later on. It is a personal decision and you have to be able to afford it also. We are able to make monthly payments on it and they gave a discount if you signed up for it there. there are so many different things they can do with the stem cells now. To us, we didnt want to take a chance and not have it done.

Re: Cord blood banking
Hi Jam
My husband also has a similiar history, of surviving hodgkins lymphoma. Our Dr definately recommended that we save the cord blood. Could you share with me some of your valueable research of which company you are aware that has the most experience with lymphoma.
Thank you very much!!!

Out of curiosity, what union reimbursed you? Maybe I should look into DH union to do the same?

Ditto to this! ETA: we didn't bank for DD#1 and won't bank for this one either. IMO the entire thing is a scam...if you need someday hopefully you'll get some from a public bank. Yes chances of you being able to use it on your own child are very slim.
