Pediatric Optician/Opthamologist?
My 5 year old son had his eyes tested at the pediatrician as well as by his school nurse, and he "passed" both tests, however, he is complaining that he is having a hard time seeing the smart board at school and thinks he needs glasses. I called a Pediatric Ophthalmologist in Pt. Jeff, and they want him to have a 1 1/2 - 2 hour exam, which includes an expensive refraction test that isn't covered by my insurance. I don't feel all of this is necessary, however, I do feel he needs to see a pediatric specialist because he is prone to screaming/crying fits at doctors offices and needs people who really know how to deal with kids. Have any of you brought your child to a place like Pearl Vision or Lens Crafters for their first eye exam? I can only imagine what a nightmare it will be with him having his eyes dilated and feel it's entirely unnecessary. I live in Suffolk. Any recommendations welcome!! TIA~

Thanks for your response. Did your child have to have his/her eyes dilated at the first visit and stay for 1 1/2 - 2 hours?

Hi - my oldest son, now 4 1/2 years old, has been wearing glasses since just before he turned 3. His first eye exam was with a ped opthamologist and we were there for almost 2 hours. I researched taking him to a Lens Crafters type of eye place and found that they just were not equipped, in my opinion, to handle an inital eye exam for a child so young.

The pediatric specialists you called in Pt. Jeff are probably the same group that also has an office in Plainview, where I brought my son for his exam last year (he was 6).
IMO, it was worth it! The refractory test wasn't covered by my insurance, I paid $60 for it. Insurance covered the rest of the visit.
Yes, he did have his eyes dilated, but it was a very easy process, he didn't seem bothered by it at ALL and they were extremely thorough and tested everything! Yes, we were there about 1.5 hours total. The waiting room was geared for kids and they do so many things, it went real fast.
You won't get that kind of exam at a Pearl or other place.

I agree with the above poster.
My kids both see Dr. Roberts in Plainview.
My DD is 2.5 and wears glasses, DS is 5 and wears a patch.
Yes, they were both dialated at first appointments and we were there for over an hour.

There are differences between them, pretty major differences IMO.

If he is complaining I would bring him to the opthalmogist. They look for things during that retraction test that a place like lens crafters won't be able to see. Dd's ped said she passed their exam, but she kept saying she had headaches. I brought her to an opthamologist and she did need glasses. She doesn't get the refraction everytime, but I welcomed the throughness at the first appointment. She was 6 or 7 I forget.

I take DS to Dr. Michelle Levy, who's in the same office as Dr. Roberts. The whole office is great...she's the only one who takes my insurance. DS started wearing glasses at 1 year and he's now almost 2.5. DS gets dilated every other visit...so every 6 months. its not bad.
