Tired of parent excuses!!!!
Just had an hour long conference with a mother about her son's issues in class ( anger mgmt, disgusting/unsanitary behavior etc) and her reasons for it is 1) hes gender confused and 2) he's trying to act like a boy by farting and such And according to her, its not affecting his grades so its not such a big deal.
Yeah- I definitely don't mind having to solve 2nd grade arguments about having him pass gas in kids faces and play with his butt crack

Re: Tired of parent excuses!!!!
I had a parent tell me last week, after calling her about him relentlessly lying about other children in the class, that her child "doesn't know how to tease." The kid lies all day long about other kids "He hit me," "He's touching me." etc. He instigates 95% of his conflicts and then his mom tells me that he has nightmares about kids in class and that they are torturing him in school. She tells me that one child is teasing him all day and hitting him in school, when I purposely separate them ALL DAY.
I really want to help him interact appropriately, but she undoes everything we work on at school. I get him to take some responsibility for his behavior and she tells him its all the other kids fault.

Re: Tired of parent excuses!!!!
I have a feeling I'll be hearing some of those soon, myself, since two of my AP kids failed last quarter, and report cards just went out... ugh.

Re: Tired of parent excuses!!!!
I had a parent tell me that her kid doesn't like to write.....as in:
ME: Your son refuses to do any of the work we are doing to prepare him for the regents.
Her: Oh...does it involve writing?
ME: Yes as it is the ENGLISH REGENTS!!!!
Her: Oh well he doesn't like to write.
ME:
Her: I'll have to talk to him and hear his side of the story....It could be something about you that he doesn't like so that is why he is refusing to do the work.

I think, in the city anyway, a good deal of this attitude stems from the TC model, at least in terms of how I was trained. We "shouldn't" make the kids read books they don't want to read, we "shouldn't" make them write what they don't want to write. We are setting them up for failure at the higher ed level, and this year I've told my kids to suck it up, and I periodically remind them that I had no interest in science, but still had to grapple my way through three classes in college. I no longer give them a choice, in part because so many kids claim every book I give them is boring.

I am so sorry. This made me feel physically sick for you. Why the HELL is ANYTHING in this scenario a TEACHER'S fault? It's called SCHOOL! UGH! DO THE WORK.
Sorry... it struck a chord, and I would like to bash some heads for you.
