Dog food recommendations ?

We're currently feeding our puppy 5 cups of Blue Buffalo Large Breed Puppy kibble a day. She seems to love the food but then again she'll eat bunny poop too so Chat Icon

In your opinion do you think this is a good brand or should we change her food to something else ??

FYI- She's a st. bernard & will be 5 months next week.

TIA !

Re: Dog food recommendations ?

I currently feed my dog Wellness Core.
I hate to be a dog food snob .. but I am very picky about what I feed her. I find most food to be junk. Nothing but fillers and by- products.
I have done my research over the years and have found this website very helpful .

Re: Dog food recommendations ?

Blue Buffalo is an excellent dog food. While your dog will eat poop a good dog food is essential.
I would also recommend Wellness (be careful with the core it is VERY high in protein) and Solid Gold (my dog's favorite is the wolf king). My dog has a lot of food allergies and these are the brands he tolerates the best. A lot of vets will recommend Science diet which in my opinion is a terrible choice...it has a lot of inexpensive filler ingredients.

We feed our pup Nutrisca....the chicken and chickpea recipe. She LOVES it and it makes her coat and skin so healthy.

I did for a while, it was fine and cheap $20
for 16lbs (?) but my doggie had a biting and scratching episode & I thought it was the food so I changed it.
Turns out it wasnt the food but she feel IN LOVE with the new one, Natural Balance Alpha Salmon & Trout (grain free) so I stayed.

ps: sometimes there are coupons for Bj's Holistic Food in the booklet.

Re: Dog food recommendations ?

our dogs get wellness and I came to that decision after researching a bunch of brands. Blue buffalo is rated very high as well. My choices were either of the two.

I agree with the PP about vets pushing science diet Chat Icon and iams too. lots of corn and junk in there. They must get something out of pushing certain brands

Re: Dog food recommendations ?

We feed our dog an organic brand of dog food. You can actually see that it is real meat. We were feeding her Blue Buffalo for a long time. However, one day when we brought her to the vet for an upset stomach, he asked what we were feeding her and he freaked out about Blue Buffalo. Apparently, he has kind of done his one study in the office that a lot of his patients that were eating blue buffalo had intestinal problems and a few developed cancer. He said there is literature out there that says the same thing. Once I was told that, I threw out the bag!

I researched all the "top" brands of dog foods and found NO literature showing that Blue Buffalo dog food causes cancer. They have had a few recalls in the recent past.
Unless the vet performed controlled studies there is NO way to tell if the dog food caused the intestinal problems or cancer...if all of his patients lived in a certain neighborhood/region the water or even soil could have caused the problems. As a scientist I hate hearing people say so so and so did a study...it takes a lot more to do a study than to talk to a few people. This is not by any means meant as an attack but I feel strongly about having accurate information passed on to consumers. My vet recommends science diet as a top brand and if you do a little research it contains a lot of fillers and many known allergens.

I'm not taking it as an attack Chat Icon I'll be honest. I was a little ignorant and took his word for it and didn't do any of the research on that. I figured he is a vet, and would know more than me. Like I said, what I had read and heard about Blue Buffalo was all good, so I was very suprised and just didn't want to take chances when he had said that. You are completely right that there are a lot of factors and variables that would really go into proving the validity of his statement. Those didnt even cross my mind at the time. If I freaked anyone out with my previous post, I apologize Chat Icon

We feed her Orijen. I'm not gonna lie--it's expensive, but her coat is gorgeous and she's healthy as an ox. I have heard good things about the other brands posted, but I'm no expert.

Re: Dog food recommendations ?

Its funny, I came on here to ask for dog food reccomendations. We've been feeding my puppy Purina Pro Plan because its what he was fed at North Shore. I took him to the vet today because he has a dry patch on his leg and is losing some hair in that area. The vet recommended that we change his food so that he gets more omega-3's. He recommended Iams and Eukanuba, but after reading this thread, I think I'd like to put some more thought into it.

This thread was very helpful! Thanks!!

Re: Dog food recommendations ?

I actually feed my small dog D1ck Van Pattens Venison and sweet potato. Its GREAT food, natural, little fillers and crap.

The vet switched us from Puppy pro plan to that due to throwing up.

Out little guy LOVES the food and is doing well.
