Are there after school programs/sports for Kindergarteners?

DD will start Kindergarten in Sept. I am in the process of filling out an early registration form her dancing school. I would prefer to do it during the week after school instead of on the weekend, but I'm not sure if that will interfere with any possible after school activities.

Thanks!

My DS is in Hip-Hop (he's now in 1st grade)....The only thing you may want to take into consideration is that they do have homework in kindergarten and they can be wiped out after school....Also, dinner, baths etc....Depends on your child I suppose ..Right now his dance class is Fridays at 4:30...Homework is not an issue on Fridays, which is a bonus....

If given the choice, I personally would opt for a Saturday morning class if it was offeredChat Icon

ETA- My school did not offer anything that I am aware of (by means of after school activities) in K......Not sure what year Girl Scouts begins , but even that I believe is not every week.....Religion class (if you are doing that), begins in 1st grade and for us is 1x a month....DS took baseball, but not with his school, practice was week-nights..

I think I'd do it during the week. If you're thinking of extracurricular activities like soccer, the games are on the weekends and usually one practice during the week. There aren't a tremendous number of activities during the week otherwise (at least in our town), maybe Girl Scouts, but it shouldn't be too crazy.

I'm not sure what is available for Kindergartners. Off of the top of my head, my school has the following running at any given time:

-Daisies/Brownies/Girl Scouts
-Chess Club
-Lego Club
-Foreign language programs
-Dance Program
-Science Club
-Homework Club (definitely go for this one if you are struggling with your kid & their homework!)
-Sewing Club
-Gaga Ball?

That's what's run through the school district. There are countless karate, ballet, jazz/tap, art programs outside of the school at a higher price.

We do dance and Daisies after school. At first they come home completely wiped from a full day of school but by the end of the first month or so they start getting into the swing of things. I'd rather do it all during the week to free up weekends. I find the majority of moms in our grade do the same. I can't believe she's going into K! My goodness Chat Icon

I know that in our school district there are several sports that are available for both preschoolers and kindergarteners. They offer both softball and soccer at those age groups and they are always weekend activities. I know that Emily's friends who are in sports are VERY busy.

As far as weekday activities, every Girl Scout troop is different. Some meet every week, some every other, but they are almost always on weekdays. For example my troop has been meeting weekly on Wednesday nights from 6:30-7:30. We do a full hour meeting this year now that they are in 1st grade, last year we did 45 minutes. But it is EVERY week. Other troops only meet every other week.

Honestly if I let Emily have her way she'd have an activity every night of the week! Right now she has activities after school 3x/week between dance, religion and GS and IMO that's quite enough! It's exhausting!

My DS school doesn't offer that much, but the town rec department has sports programs that have, so far, always been on Saturdays. After school during the week, DS comes with me where I work, which is a non-profit center similar, but nicer then a rec center. He has taken scatter dodge, mini golf, flag football, pizza making, cupcake class and for the spring he'll be taking carpentry, scatter dodge, science experiments and basketball. It's not as cheap as something school run, but not as expensive as a private class.

Nothing is offered by the school. Once a month they have PTA events after school, this month they had a Valentines Day dance. Over the summer we had him in pee wee football, in the spring he starts baseball. I think they even have pee wee lacross. I think it's through the district but I'm not sure. Nothing in the way of clubs though.

Re: Are there after school programs/sports for Kindergarteners?

in Three Village we have Spanish Club for K students that I know a bunch are in. We're doing Daisys in GS too so those are 2 things I know ppl are in right in school.

For mine, I would say anything after school is so hard on K. They are totally wiped - its not even the academics, its the bus ride home and who was playing with who on the playground and all those new social things going on that wipes them out. She just wants to eat a ton when she gets home and relax in the den. Its frustrating b/c I havent seen her all day and want to spend time or take her somewhere, but...its pointless b/c it turns into me begging to get out of the house. something to think about.

Totally agree with this. I do one activity per week with my DC in K. They have a long and busy school day, and you can see they really desire some downtime.
