Thoughts on gyms

I'm thinking about leaving my current gym. They did some remodeling and I just don't like it anymore. It's really going downhill.

I'm looking at possibly Retro Fitness in East Meadow or LA Fitness in Levittown. Does anyone belong to either of these gyms? I'd love some feedback!
Also, does anyone know what they are charging?

Thank you!

I haven't been to those locations, but I've been to the Retro in Ronkonkoma, which they said is the biggest one on LI, and it was so packed and over crowded with high school kids. I had to wait for machines, some things were broken, I didn't like it. They also don't have classes, just exercise DVDs they call classes - so dumb. And its $20, plus sign up and maintenance fees with a 1 year contract. At 20/mo you def. get what you pay for - which isn't much. Also heard canceling is a pain, and they bill you extra months. Plus side is East Meadow is brand new.

LA Fitness is the same everywhere. Huge, tons of equipment, decent classes, lots of spin bikes which is awesome. Def more expensive, I think I paid like $45-50/mo, plus $50 down, but there is no contract, you can cancel anytime. I had no issue canceling there - only canceled bc I moved.

I would pick LA in a heartbeat, it's a "real gym" as opposed to Retro which is like planet fitness - just machines.

Re: Thoughts on gyms

Thank you for the feedback! I didn't realize LA was Bally's.
I used to go to Planet Fitness and hated it because to me it was like a playground for teenagers. I'd be going very early (like 6AM) so I think no matter where I go crowds shouldn't be a problem.

I'm going to visit both and see what I think. With the feedback I've been getting though I'm leaning toward LA fitness.

I go to Retro in Farmingdale and never have a problem with crowds or anything. I go later in the evening though. Prime time would be an issue at any gym so I always go off hours.

I don't know about either of those, but before I moved last year, I was a member of North Shore Fitness in East Meadow which is not far from Retro Fitness. I went early in the morning and it was always empty and they have lots of classes. I was paying 39 a month.

I used to belong to North Shore. It is a very nice gym. I'm looking at LA and Retro because they are within 5 mins from my house (whereas North Shore is about 15). Chat Icon
