eliptical vs treadmill
I find the treadmill very boring.. I can't run the entire time so if I do use it is a combination of walking and running. I usually go on the eliptical for about 30-40 mins until I get bored then go on the stairmaster or bike for an additional 10-15 mins. I need to lose about 10lbs by May so my question is which is better for weight loss..is one better than the other? If I start using treadmill should I try and run the whole time? HELP I'm desperate

Re: eliptical vs treadmill
I find that I get the best results with running. The elliptical is good too, but I lost more weight and had more consistent results running. For me the ellipctical just didn't compare. I lost all my baby weight and then 10 additional lbs running. Intervals of walking and running is good when you are just starting up!

Re: eliptical vs treadmill
I saw much better results weight loss wise when I was running. However, my knees just can't handle running anymore. To get a good workout on the elliptical raise the resistance and push yourself hard!!

Calories wise, running will burn more calories, but you can do things like walk at a steep incline to burn similar calories. Also there is a lot of research that says interval training (hard running for short times followed by rest/walking) burn calories well after you have stopped running.
If you have knee/joint issues, elliptical might be better for long term health

I use the elliptical to give me knees a break or to still get a workout when I have pain or am tired... def a lot easier than running. Google HIIT for the treadmill and you will find awesome advice for fat burning.

Re: eliptical vs treadmill
Thanks everybody!! I think Im going to start running in my neigborhood first and try and build up some endurance so I don't embarass myself at the gym. I actually was on the track team in high school and used to run miles everyday but that was a looong time ago

Re: eliptical vs treadmill
i am a terrible Runner but if you are on the treadmill the best way to lose if you cant run is to keep changing the elevation it really impacts the intensity of your work out and will get your heart beat up.
