Where do you look for a contractor?

I got a recommendation for my architect from a friend. I got several recommendations for contractors from my architect. I figured that if he's worked with them for years, but isn't affiliated with them at all (he gave me 4 recommendations), they are probably pretty good.

Word of mouth.
Other trades like plumbers, electricians, painters - Pennysaver or actual yellow pages. We actually had a lot of luck with the Pennysaver/Yellow Pages.
