A couple of Breastfeeding Questions! Please come in!
1. Do you drink alcohol? If so, WHEN is the *best* time to safely have a drink?
2. If I don't feed my child because my husband is feeding them a bottle (we supplement formula), do I need to pump in order maintain my supply?

Re: A couple of Breastfeeding Questions! Please come in!
I've had a drink and fed my son maybe an hour or so later. At the breastfeeding class I took the instructor said just to not feed the baby if you're "polluted". Its good to pump when someone if giving the baby a bottle at the time that you would have been feeding. I do that to maintain a supply and have been EBF for 8 months. Good Luck!

I would have one when I wanted it, but I have maybe a dozen drinks a year if that. On a night I know i'll have 1 or 2 I dump it, but I really don't need to. The rule I heard and go by is if you are buzzed or drunk dump, but a drink is fine as long as you're sober.

In the 1st 12wks I always pumped when he would be eating if I did not feed him (but see below). Same with my daughter and she was exc. bottle fed bm since I pumped. It also depends on your supply as well. Starting at 3wks I dropped a feeding so my DH could feed him a bottle and I could sleep, but I am a huge over producer so dropping that helped level me out more. So I did the feedings at 8a, 12p, 4p, 8p, 12a and then 8a. I dropped that 4a and I did fine, but like I said I had and have a HUGE over supply and any extra pumping is a no no for me. I can seriously do every single feeding and still pump 20 extra ounces a day with only pumping in the morning after he eats and before bed, but I am a good pumper.

Re: A couple of Breastfeeding Questions! Please come in!
In the beginning I had no desire to drink, I was so darn tired! BUT once the sleeping & feeding got establish & they were able to take a bottle of BM I planned drinks....my DH would have it ready for as soon as I finished a feeding. LOL!
Yes, you are supposed to pump if bottles are being given. 1x won't kill the supply, but if it's often, yes, of your body will stop supplying for that extra feeding.

1. I'm not a drinker, but I have heard that pumping and dumping is a safe way to go.
2. Yes, pump during those feedings to keep your supply up.

Re: A couple of Breastfeeding Questions! Please come in!
The few times I have had a drink it was always right after I fed her so I knew it wouldn't be an issue by the time I fed her again. I was told that if you're not buzzed or drunk, your milk is OK. They sell test strips so you can test your breast milk instead of pumping and dumping.
Yes, pump when the baby is getting a bottle to make sure your body knows to still make enough for that feeding.
