Trayvon Martin
I did a search and couldn't find any posts, which was surprising given how much media attention this has gotten.
What a horrible, terrible tragedy and overall sad story. I wanted to cry when I read how he was on the phone with his girlfriend telling her how he was scared, and again when I read that all police found on him were not weapons, but a bag of Skittles and a bottle of iced tea.
It's a true crime how his shooter is walking free right now. What a slap in the face to Trayvon's family. I found an article about the shooter, and how he's made 46 911 calls in the past two years or so, the most recent ones from the past year-year and a half focusing on "suspicious" young black men. One call was about a SEVEN YEAR OLD. Seriously?
Such a sad, sad story. My heart breaks for his family.

I noticed that there aren't any posts about it too.
This case is maddening! I follow Charles Blow (NYT journalist) on Twitter and he keeps up on the case. The poor parents have shown such strength and those...morons...from the police dept. should all be answering for the absolute clusterf**k they made of this case. And where the hell is George Zimmerman?!
He hunted that poor boy down and shot him. And he is still free?!

This Stand Your Ground law is frightening if he gets away with this. This boy didn't do anything to threaten him.

Its a disgrace.
Zimmerman, was not even a register neighborhood watch person. He has NUMEROUS calls to 911 with similiar situations in the past. He has a violent past. He was warned by POLICE to NOT follow this boy walking. He did anyway.
You hear this kid yelling HELP while being attacked by Zimmerman.
Sadly, in this day if Trayvon had been the SHOOTER, instead of the victim, you KNOW he would be in jail now.
A complete disgrace. I really am impressed with his parents. They have shown nothing but calm and grace under the circumstances. I on the otherhand, would be a raging lunatic.
And, per Zimmermans atty on the TODAY show this morning, he is in hiding due to "numerous death threats"

A 17 year old boy in central Florida was walking back to his gated community from a convenience store, where he went to buy a bag of Skittles and a bottle of iced tea. He was wearing a hooded sweatshirt and on the phone with his girlfriend, when the shooter, Zimmerman, started to follow him. Trayvon told his girlfriend he was scared, and she told him to run. Zimmerman stated that he shot Trayvon because he felt "threatened" by him. He has not been arrested.

The whole situation is awful.
I cringe at the idea that I would have to give "The Talk" to my sons.
For my MLIS, I had to take a reference class. One statement by the professor affected me deeply. The most discriminated group at a reference library desk is the young African -American male. Seriously, this is an awful society we are living in, if the librarians are prejudice.
I feel so much for Trayvon's family. My heart breaks, but I will try to use his death to educate my children on not only the ills of the world (as I know comments are made about their heritage), but how to correct them.

Add to the fact that previous to this incident, a policeman's 21yr old son beat a black homeless man, left him bleeding and was not arrested. Only after it was on youtube did he turn himself in. Sanford, FL is a disgrace

I am truly disturbed by this and its nice to here others who are as well. I think of my son who is half black and think this could happen to him. I'm scared that in this day and age shit like this can still happen and the guy can not be charged. Its truly frightening.

Same here.
I had read about "the talk" & "the rules" a long time ago. I was stunned back then at the time how black parents had to impress upon their kids to be dressed nicely, etc because of the judgments & danger based on skin color. This is so disturbing.
I really hope justice is served. The sad thing is justice won't bring back this kid. Justice won't change the fact the stereotypes exist

i am not taking sides here, but what a lot of people are failing to mention or see is that Trayvon Martin was a 6'2" football player. Zimmerman is also of Hispanic decent. Also heard on the 911 tape is Zimmerman referring to martin having his hand in his waist band.
my heart goes out to the Matin family, but so many people are convinced it was a racially motive killing.
police also may have enough to arrest Zimmerman, but from what i have been reading they don't have a conclusive case to convict him.
i just think its sad for both families... one because the Martins lost their son, and 2 because there is NO way Zimmerman will ever get a fair trial. not saying he is innocent.. yes he did kill this boy, but his side of the story will always be doubted and not believed.

George Zimmerman was told by the 911 operator to NOT pursue Trayvon. He continued to follow him. George Zimmerman is heard on the 911 tapes saying "They always get away with things" and "f**king coons".
Trayvon is heard on a 911 tape screaming in fear and distress. ( a woman called 911 saying there is a fight in front of her house).
The girl Trayvon was talking to said he was telling her that somebody was following him in a car and he was getting scared, she told him to run--those were his last words.
George Zimmerman being Hispanic doesn't mean that he wasn't racist.

This whole stories makes me feel ill. That there are still blatant unapologetic racists in this country is infuriating. I still can't believe Zimmerman is not in jail

I have so many angry thoughts running through my head that there is no way I can express any of them eloquently or even clearly, but I will say that I fully believe that George Zimmerman was fully aware of what he was doing and has lied and fabricated details to make himself look better after the fact. I can only pray that the evidence on the tapes is enough to at least persuade the DA/police to arrest him and a grand jury to indict him.
People who behave like George Zimmerman are an abomination to society.

Your post saddens me.
Tom Brady is a 6'4 football player. Do you really think that, even if he was unknown and had his hand in his waistband, that Zimmerman would have shot Tom Brady if he was walking down the street that day? I think not. Is it a crime to have your hand in your waistband? Trayvon had NO weapon.
From what I know, racism seems like the cause for this killing of an innocent boy. Feel bad for Zimmerman bc he won't get a fair trial?! He hasn't even been charged, he's walking around free! Second of all, no matter what, Zimmerman is still alive. Trayvon is dead and did nothing I know of to deserve it.
