i am not taking sides here, but what a lot of people are failing to mention or see is that Trayvon Martin was a 6'2" football player. Zimmerman is also of Hispanic decent. Also heard on the 911 tape is Zimmerman referring to martin having his hand in his waist band.
my heart goes out to the Matin family, but so many people are convinced it was a racially motive killing.
police also may have enough to arrest Zimmerman, but from what i have been reading they don't have a conclusive case to convict him.
i just think its sad for both families... one because the Martins lost their son, and 2 because there is NO way Zimmerman will ever get a fair trial. not saying he is innocent.. yes he did kill this boy, but his side of the story will always be doubted and not believed.
Trayvon Martin was a 17 years old. He might have been 6 ft 2 but he was only 140 lbs. George Zimmerman is 27 and 240lbs. Trayvon was carrying a bottle of Snapple, a bag of Skittles, and talking on a cell phone to a girl as he was walking home. Not sure how he had his hand tucked into his waist band, especially as he was RUNNING away from the grown man who was pursuing him in a CAR. The man in the car, btw, had a 9mm Glock.
George Zimmerman was told by the 911 operator to NOT pursue Trayvon. He continued to follow him. George Zimmerman is heard on the 911 tapes saying "They always get away with things" and "f**king coons".
Trayvon is heard on a 911 tape screaming in fear and distress. ( a woman called 911 saying there is a fight in front of her house).
The girl Trayvon was talking to said he was telling her that somebody was following him in a car and he was getting scared, she told him to run--those were his last words.
George Zimmerman being Hispanic doesn't mean that he wasn't racist.
Thank you for saying this and saying it so well!

We would not be debating this if Zimmerman, a man with a criminal past, was stopped from having a gun.

A boy is dead. My heart is broken. I don't care if he was black, white or purple.
They say he was fighting with Zimmerman (after being followed by him). Zimmerman got out of his car and went after this boy after being told NOT to. He initiated the fight and then claims self defense. How do you start a fight and then claim self defense?
He shot this child. I don't care if Trayvon was a punk, a bad student, a typical teenager, a dirtbag or whatever else.. he was SOMEBODY'S CHILD. He was unarmed. He was followed because he 'looked suspicious'. He was messed with because he didn't fit George Zimmerman's view of what a 'good kid' should look like. And ultimately he was shot and KILLED because George Zimmerman wanted to play cop.
Zimmerman should be in jail.
Thanks J! Perfecty said as always!!!

I will admit I haven't read up on everything about this case- but this part has had me very disturbed- since when do neighborhood watch people carry guns? They are not law enforcement. I wonder if this guy tried to get into a police department and got turned away because he failed the psych part. He should not have had a gun. A wannabe cop with a gun is a tragedy waiting to happen.

Re: Trayvon Martin
Fox News 3/26
Trayvon Martin's killer claims teen punched him, slammed his head into ground
SANFORD, Fla. – The controversy surrounding the shooting death of teenager Trayvon Martin took a new turn Monday when the Orlando Sentinel reported Neighborhood Watch volunteer George Zimmerman told police Martin decked him with a single punch, then repeatedly slammed his head into the sidewalk.
The Sentinel said much of Zimmerman's account had been corroborated by witnesses, according to authorities.
As Zimmerman's version of events surfaced, rallies were planned in Sanford and other cities to mark the one-month anniversary of 17-year-old Martin's death.
But as time passed, questions have only multiplied about what happened the night of February 26 as Martin walked home from a 7-Eleven in a gated community in Sanford, about 20 miles north of Orlando.
Zimmerman, who reportedly is in hiding, has claimed he shot Martin, who was unarmed, in self-defense.
Martin's family and thousands who have turned out at rallies on his behalf nationwide claim he was murdered without provocation and raised questions about racism and police handling of the case.
Ben Crump, the Martin family's attorney, told MSNBC, "if George Zimmerman had done what a neighborhood watchman is supposed to do - watch - Trayvon Martin would be alive today."
The Sentinel said Monday that authorities had provided the paper with Zimmerman's account of events, in which he said he called police after spotting Martin, then lost sight of him and was returning to his SUV when the teen allegedly approached him from the left rear and they exchanged words.
Zimmerman said Martin punched him in the nose, then as he fell to the ground, got on top of him and slammed his head into the sidewalk, causing Zimmerman to yell for help.
The paper said at least one witness told police he saw Martin pounding Zimmerman.
Reports had surfaced earlier of people hearing cries for help but it was not clear if they came from Zimmerman or Martin.
A woman who said she and her roommate witnessed the last moments of Martin's life told Dateline NBC they heard the voice of what sounded like a young person in distress just before hearing a gunshot.
"It sounded young," Mary Cutcher said. "It didn't sound like a grown man is my point."
She added that they also saw Zimmerman straddling the teen's body with his hands pressed on his back, making no effort to aid him.
Zimmerman's lawyer, Craig Sonner, and a close friend, Joe Oliver, appeared on NBC's "Today" show Monday to defend him, claiming he was not racist and that he had received a broken nose and gash on the head in the confrontation.

Re: Trayvon Martin
even if this is ALL true, that Martin opened the whoop ass on this man, why should that matter one bit.
if you mean to tell me that in Florida, an attacker with a gun can KILL me b/c I manage to gain the upper hand in a tussle, well then this world is in worse shape than I thought.
even barring the race issue, this man SHOULD BE IN JAIL. how this is even debatable I cannot fathom.

and I really think Geraldo saying Trayvon's hoodie caused him to be a target was ridiculous.
In no way do I think Zimmerman was right. Trayvon was totally innocent.
However, maybe we should be a little more cautious about how we let our kids leave the house. Google "hooded gunman". Apparently it's almost a "uniform" My 2 year old wears hoodies and I really hope they are out of style by the time he is a teenager.
I am sitting here typing in a hoodie with my hood up because i'm sick and freezing cold. I am "packing" some kleenex and cough drops in my front pocket. Should I change before I leave the house to buy Nyquil or am I ok because it's daylight? Or am I ok because i'm a white female???????
Depends on how lunatics like Zimmerman would see you, not how I do. Because you are female I'm guessing he wouldn't see you as a threat.
So I need to try to anticipate how someone like George Zimmerman perceives me bc he is allowed to kill whoever he wants if he feel threatened? I really don't understand the "Stand your ground" law. It sounds completely insane to me if Zimmerman is seen as justified in perceiving a deadly threat in unarmed Treyvon Martin.

Re: Trayvon Martin
It is absolutely a tragic story, but I hate that it was grabbed up by the race-baiters. The black panthers now have a $10,000 bounty out for the capture of Zimmerman. We need to know all details of the story and a little background on this teenager. He was suspended from school at the time for fighting, so there is a capacity for violence. The picture being distributed of him was from when he younger. He is currently a large man. The reason why Zimmerman was not arrested is because there was a key witness who saw Trayvon on top of him, beating him, and believed it was self-defense. There have been a number of cases over the past year in NY, in which people murdered others out of self-defense and did not go to jail. It happens in all states, all the time. I want to know more facts of this case, absolutely.

it may have appeared to be self defense to a bystander, but once the Zimmerman 911 call is added to the picture, he clearly initiated the entire encounter with this young man, in possession of a hand gun.
no. just NO. what he did IS NOT self defense.

What did he say on the 911 tape? I've been hearing a lot about this but have not done much research until now.

We do not know that Zimmerman initiated the fight. Those details have not been told. As far as following him, that may have been part of his training in the neighborhood watch. In the 911 call the person screaming for help was not Trayvon, it was Zimmerman. The court believed it was self-defense. Are courts always correct, no. It's need further investigation. Do I believe that the Black Panthers should be offering a dead or alive bounty on Zimmerman? No. Zimmerman also says that he has black people in his family and is not racist. We don't know if that is true or not either. The media only reports one side. There's always another. Doesn't make the other side, right, but it's good to know all the facts.

I doubt we'll ever know all of the facts, but there is nothing right about the situation.
Zimmerman was told NOT to get out of his car by the police. He disregarded the order and proceeded to follow Trayvon. Zimmerman did not witness a crime or have any cause for suspicion. All he saw was a black kid with a hoodie walking down the street.
How do we know that Trayvon didn't fear his life? What would you do if someone was following you and got out of their car? We don't know who initiated it. If it were me being followed and approached by someone, I'm pretty sure I'd try to defend myself.
As far as the 911 call, I don't think they know whose voice it was. When I heard it it was a little hard to know who it was.
ETA: I also agree with you about the Black Panthers. They are just mucking up the situation and causing more harm than good.

I am clearly in the minority here with what I am about to say - kind of radical - can we get more details before we convict anyone of anything?
My biggest problem is that it took so long for the police department to notify his family and begin a full investigation.

Re: Trayvon Martin
I doubt we will ever get a clear picture since the police bungled this case. They did not take Zimmermans clothes for evidence, one polive officer "corrected" a witness that stated she heard Trayvon screaming for help. Listening to the tapes it seems to be a young man not quite through with puberty screaming for help. Also Zimmerman is the one with a criminal past, for assaulting a police officer. Also the fact that Zimmerman feltnscared for his life yet he haid no injuries that required an immediate trip to the hospital

I wont give my opnion on this case because i dont have all the facts but I will say this; I think using deadly force should be the absolute last resort in any situation; its bad enough when cops, who are trained to handle hostile siutations, shoot and kill unarmed people (no matter why it was done, they really thought they were in danger etc.) now we have to worry about any person with absolutley no training doing the same.
I cant imagine how many murders people get away with this law. What stops anyone to say that they killed someone cause they feared for thier life even if that wasnt the case. Seriously how easy it must be to plan out killing someone and getting away with it with law like this.
I can not belive that this law even exists and still does!
