Dial-3 testing for kindergarten
My DD is being screened this week for kindergarten using the dial-3. What can I expect?

I'm not sure what Dial-3 is but if it's the standard test, they ask them to identify pictures, count, can they spell their name, read, colors, etc.
Very basic. Very simple & absolutely nothing to worry about. We were introduced & then I waited outside.

DD has to go in May for this. The note I got says:
Each child will be assessed in the following areas:
~Gross and fine motor development (kindergarten teacher)
~Conceptual development (school psychologist)
~Communication skills (speech specialist)
~Hearing and vision (school nurse)

Yes, we use this in our school too.
The child will go to 3 different teachers who do e/ section (usually)--as stated above (3 sections)
Basically they have to: skip; catch balls; build w/ blocks; write some letters & their name; identify colors.
They'll have to say certain words (ie; cup) to see how they pronounce them. They'll have to identify body parts; a little rhyming; count by rote & objects; say the alphabet song.
Nothing to worry about.
Each evaluator also makes comments as to how easily they left the parent; how willing they were to answer; if they gave up easily, etc.

Christine, when we do them at my school the parent just finds out "your child did well, no issues". If we had some concerns then the results are reviewed more closely w/ the parent (usually w/ the K teacher/psychologist as well).

We have this coming up soon. I was wondering if parents spend time preparing the kids. They did give us a list of skills tested. I was also wondering whether they use the results in K at all or whether the teacher even gets the results. For example, do they use results from this when assigning reading groups?

They gave us some handouts about the test. I looked through it only briefly & I thought that children who have been in pre-K would have no problems. Now I am wondering how important this test is. I work with my child at home and when my mom babysits she does something academic every time. I was just wondering if I should gear what we do to this test or let the chips fall as they may. Honestly, I prefer kids to learn and not to gear anything toward a test but when I think about how competitive some parents are, I wonder if I should. If they only use the test to see if he is ready for K, then it is not worth it. I have not looked for much information online but b/c we have teachers here (who are my friends, too!) I thought I could find out a bit more.

I don't know- anyone I have asked said that they didn't prepare their child for it. Ours is next month as well. We were just told that they are asked about colors, shapes, numbers and letters. Given some physical things to do such as jump, catch a ball I think - but it was just mentioned at preschool beginning of the year. They didn't sound like it was something you prep for. I can say that the district just says that it is for placement purposes - i.e so that they don't have say 15 children who can't do something - so they can mix them up accordingly (so for example you don't have 15 children who can't zip their jackets or don't know their letters) - that they mx the classes so that they have all levels in each class. I think they also quickly check their speech. I could be wrong but I think they meet with a gym person, speech and then maybe it was a teacher?
So I'm curious to hear on here if that is true.

It is nothing to 'prepare' for ...its a simple kinda laid back testing. To get a "feel" for your child. If a child walked in and couldnt catch a ball, say his alphabets, stack a block, know any colors, then they really wouldn't be ready for Kindergarten.
I don't think 'testing' is the right word for it.
My son wouldnt go in alone, they didnt care. We sat with the speech therapist , maybe 3 minutes tops...alphabet song, write his name, say a few words, recognize a few letters.
Then we sat with one of the Kindergarten Teachers, maybe 4-5 minutes tops, did colors, some body parts, easy to hard ( ie: nose to knuckle), some concepts ( behind, next to etc), more , less, bigger, smaller..
Then we spoke with the occupational Therapist...again, maybe 3-4 minutes.
Catch a bean bag, hop on one foot, skip. Copy with blocks what she made with hers.
It was super fast and super informal. HTH!
