I'm trying to stay positive... (Early Entry Kindergarten testing)
I have been working with my DS for months now and he is more than ready for Kindergarten. I've been doing "learning" with him to prepare for the Early Entry Kindergarten testing that he has on this coming Tuesday. I am beyong nervous/anxious/excited and worried. We live in NC and the testing here I have been told is VERY hard to pass. But, I have been working on samples from the tests with him and he gets them. He knows more than I thought he did. He can now even read and sound out 100 sight words. He's so ready and wants to go so bad.
But anyway, all I have been hearing is how hard it is, he'll never pass it, etc. And today, my DH met with one of his preschool teachers for a normal Spring conference and she said he's definitely ready but won't pass the test because he has to be able to read a whole book on a 1st great level. And she doesn't know anyone that has passed the test, etc. etc. Talk about being negative and making me feel terrible about it. I know it's a VERY hard test, but come on people... try to be a little bit positive about it! My son is VERY excited about Kindergarten, he only misses the cutoff by 12 days. He would have made the cutoff by at least a month if they didn't change it recently.
And to top it off, I found out today that I may not be able to take him to the test. I have to work Graduation on Saturday at work so I can get overtime (time and a half), but won't if I use any sick or vacation time in the same week. I would have to use Vacation time to take him. I need to work graduation so I can make some of the money towards this test since it's so expensive. I can't win!!!
I'm just tired of everyone's negativity around me about this. Why can't they be more positive about it? I'm trying not to get my hopes up because the chances of him passing are slim to none, but at the same time, I'm that he passes. He will be so upset and will probably cry if he can't go to K with his friends.
Ok, vent over....

I'm sorry that everyone around you is so negative...but is it possible they are just being realistic? It seems you've done all you can do for him..be proud of that. I don't get why they would need to read at a first grade level if its only kindergarten? Why would a kindergarten test be so hard? If I'm understanding correctly..its just early entry b/c he misses the cut off correct? So wouldn't he simply need to show he' at a regular kindergarten level?

It's possible they are. I have done all that I can and I am VERY proud of where he's at and so is he. He gets so excited answering correctly, lol.
I don't understand why either? I've been told that it's so hard to discourage early entry. From what people are telling me, they say it's extremely hard, but how do they really know? Have they taken the test themselves or is it just going by what other people say? Most people don't even both taking it because they hear it's so hard. Maybe it's hard for one family over another because their kid is at a different level than that other child? I was told that they take his scores and compare them to what other kids his age are getting and then figure them out. I guess I just have to hope a lot of kids that don't know much have taken the test, lol!
This stinks!

Why the rush to have him in Kindergarten? If he doesn't pass it then maybe he's not ready.

Why the rush to have him in Kindergarten? If he doesn't pass it then maybe he's not ready.
There are 2 reasons:
1) Financially because of paying another child care bill for another year because we both work FT. We don't make a lot of money to begin with so money is tight with having the baby in child care as well as him.
2) He's more than ready all around! My older son is finishing up 1st grade so I know what they do in Kindergarten and he can do it easily.
The thing is that he would pass a regular Kindergarten test no problem, but since they want him to do a lot more than that, I'm worried a bit. He's ahead of all the kids in his current preschool class that are going into K already because they made the cutoff. His teachers have told us that. He just really knows more than he needs to at this age. I mean it's only 12 days, not 3+ months.
I wouldn't even consider him taking this test if I felt in anyway he wasn't ready. We decided that last year. We said we would wait and see where he's at when it was time to decide.
