Fish Oil- anyone else use this with their DC?
We've been reading about the benefits of Fish Oil and a bunch of parents in our support group give it to their kids. Some claim noticeable results, some don't but say it could help over time and can't hurt. So we decided to try it. They said not to get any old fish oil supplement you see in pharmacies as it's not as pure so we got Carlson's for Kids which was recommended by many.
He's been getting it every day straight for 2 weeks solid and I swear to you he's talking more....granted his words are not really understood by many besides us and his therapists but he's suddenly spontaneously "saying" words that he never did. I know most kids have a word explosion at some point and maybe this is his and has nothing to do at all with the fish oil, I know that. But either way we're so excited. He was even "singing" along to a song in the car. He's never ever ever done anything like that, ever.

We give fish oil. I use either Carlson or Nordic Naturals. It is also healthy for you. Have seen increase in eye contact with it. But we use a lot of other things. So it is hard to say what is really working.

This sounds great and worth a try! Do you give it in liquid form and if so what do you mix it with? I have a problem with chewable vitamins and such. He wont even try fruit snacks.

The Carlson's is in liquid form, I give it via dropper. You can't get it in CVS or other pharmacies like that. They'll carry fish oil but not "good" fish oil. I got it in Fairway but I'm sure most health food stores or natural/organic type supermarkets will have it like Whole Foods, etc. I also think Vitamin Shoppe carries it.
This is the one I give but there's another flavor too:

We have Nordic and I mix it in juice for DS. He won't take the tummies and wont take it plain, though it does have a lemony flavor.
Honestly, I don't see a big difference and it has been a few months, but figure it doesn't hurt and may help.

One of the mom's in DS's last class has twin girls, both on the spectrum. She also said she's given it for a long time and while she can't say there's been a definitive leap in their progress since starting it can help them over time and it can't hurt like you said so she's not stopping.
I could be clinging to nothing I know...it's just so exciting to see.....something....happening. Who knows, since it's good for you anyway I'm sticking with it.

Been using for well over a year. At first it was a struggle for DS to take it but now it's not an issue at all. I don't mix I just give straight from a dropper mixed with a little agave.
We currently use Nordic Naturals Childrens DHA in Strawberry. We've also used Carlsons. The Carlsons is a bit thinner so it might go down easier. Either one is top notch and can be found on Amazon.

I think it's worth trying, and there is definitely research showing that fish oil supplements helps with brain activity. My son's neurologist recommended we try it actually, and I do think if nothing else, he is getting nutrients he will not through his other food.
I almost want to say I am seeing fewer meltdowns since we started, but it's hard to attribute this to the fish oil.

We tried fish oil, didn't do a thing.
After watching a Dateline story about supplements, I would be very careful which brands of these things you are choosing. None of them are regulated by the FDA, so you just never know what's really in them.

Efalex has been a wonderful help. It has zero fish smell. We get it shipped and it's lemon/lime
Fish Oil is really important for all of us. Even now doctors that are dealing with the geriatric population are pushing their patients to take some.
Of course eating salmon is ideal but we can't always do this.
Flax Seed Oil, Evening Primrose Oil all great fatty acids as well.
The neurons need the fatty protection. Unfortunately, toxins are crossing the blood/brain barrier and the neurons are not being protected.
Breast milk and baby formula are loaded with these fatty acids. I often wonder if taking our children off breast milk and formulas at age 1 could be a cause of regression.

I was hoping you'd chime in. Seriously, you always have great input about this stuff. He's not fighting me on it as I give to him via dropper, straight. So he's going to keep getting it.
What is efelex? Liquid or no? He won't take "hard" vitamins, even if I tell him they're candy.

Did you get the Carlson's for Kids, it's specifically for kids so DS gets 1/2 tsp a day.
Not sure how the adult version differs...someone on here may know better.
