Spinoff to the cost of living on LI post
If you could leave Long Island, would you? And where would you want to live instead? Just wondering.

Re: Spinoff to the cost of living on LI post
To answer my own post, although my whole family is here and all of my friends DH and I have talked about moving off the island again. (We lived in FL for 4 yrs after college).
Not sure specifically where I would want to go although we looked into NC, VA, maybe even heading out west more to places like WA and OR. There is no one place I am dying to live but it would be nice to be somewhere pretty, less crowded, and more affordable to live.
Who knows what the future holds for us, maybe one day we'll leave NY behind. We'll see.

If I could take all my family and friends with me, yes I would leave. I would love to live in NC preferably near Wilmington Since it's a dream anyway, I would also consider Italy

Re: Spinoff to the cost of living on LI post
We always talk about it because the cost of living is out of control here but I doubt we'd ever do it. For the mere fact that we'd have nobody - no friends, no family
If we did go somewhere it would have to be someplace further south...I need warmer weather!

Re: Spinoff to the cost of living on LI post
I am itching to move off of Long Island tp Florida for a few reasons. 1- I just need a fresh start 2- I can't stand my job anymore 3- My family is in Florida 4- I'll eventually be able to own something! unlike here in NY
I am trying to save to move, I have nothing holding me here ..no kids or marriage or house (i rent) The only thing holding my back are my really close friends who are pretty much my family and the scariness of not finding work even though most days I'd rather be unemployed then work here!

Re: Spinoff to the cost of living on LI post
DH and I talk about this all the time and we regret making NY our first choice when his job asked where he wanted to be assigned to.
Even though the majority of our families are here, we would love to move out of NY. Cost of living is way too high and there is too much stress and congestion and quality of life just seems to be lower thanks to all the stresses and the financial burdens of living here. We've kicked around VA, NC, TX (we love Dallas) and FL as possible places to move to. DH's job will pay for relocation and we will probably eventually have to move if he wants to get ahead, so this is a real consideration for us.

If DH could get a job in DC, then VA or MD. Much closer to family than we are now, we could do more frequent trips home.

Re: Spinoff to the cost of living on LI post
I did already and came home to TX
But if I could up and move anywhere I'd try Virginia or Cali (but Cali isn't cost effective). I could probably swing Dallas because of job oppurtunities and growth but I'd hate the traffic and the hail/tornados. Houston is a hell-no. lol
Cost of living made it easier to move.
Losing friends and family proximity is hard but not the end of the world for me. But then again I moved to NYC with no friends/family and 10yrs later I left with tons of family and friends there. Coming back to visit actually in a few months! hahaha

Well if I could convince my whole family to leave here as well, I'd LOVE to live in Vancouver or somewhere down south like Georgia.

California...hands down
I tell DH almost daily that I WILL live there in the future. With him or without him
It's my favorite place ever and I really think about being there everyday . Plus we won't be totally alone. I have a lot of family there.

Re: Spinoff to the cost of living on LI post
It's getting to that point for us.
DH is stagnant at his job and I have had my master's in elementary ed for 4 years. My parents said they would follow us wherever we go, so that's a plus.
I would love to go to somewhere in New England-MA, CT, NH- but I don't think the teaching market is much better up there.
We've been talking about MD and DE lately.

Re: Spinoff to the cost of living on LI post
If money wasn't a concern...I would say Hawaii but since we both work in education and the pay there is horrible, I can't see that happening.
I would also consider south somewhere but again given our professions we are probably doing better in NY than we would most other places.

Re: Spinoff to the cost of living on LI post
We are stuck here primarily b/c of DH's job. His whole family lives here too but I think the lure of a huge house and better living situation would get him to leave them behind.
I would love to live upstate but I'm not sure how much of an improvement that would be financially. I have never looked into another area b/c we have another 20 yrs b/f DH can retire. I think I would enjoy Lake Tahoe (Cali side) or maybe even an area in FL.

Re: Spinoff to the cost of living on LI post
When I first moved to Suffolk a few years ago, I always wanted to move back to Queens. My mind hasn't changed, but that is not first choice anymore if we could move. I would probably choose to move to Bellrose Village. It's beautiful and close to the city. (My husband works in the city.) But honestly, I don't know if I would want to move too far from where we are now because my parents are a couple of blocks away, as well as almost all of our family are close to us now! ETA: Actually, if we ever sell this house and buy a new one, I always pictured us moving to Stony Brook. (I would love for our son (future kids) to go to Ward Melville, because that is where my husband went)

i am the anti Florida LoL my choice would be Pennsylvania, Virginia or Delaware. I would even consider Ohio but hubby wouldn't. I need to be near water, have seasons, have some form of historical history to it.

Re: Spinoff to the cost of living on LI post
Whats funny is that I was so upset to leave NY years ago...I was excited to be joining my boyfriend (now husband) in DC, but sad to be away from NY and my family.
However..I would recommend to ANYONE who is hesitant about moving to just do it!! I love where I am now (MD)...its beautiful, i am close to so much (DC is right here, northern VA is so close which we LOVE) and my family is a 3.5 hour drive. I see them on average twice a month! (i'm either in NY or someone is here visiting). It's the perfect balance. And my taxes are $3500/year, making owning our own home possible. We could never buy a thing if we were in NY.
NOW with that being said..I do adore NY and understand totally why some wouldn't want to leave. But I've met so many people that would never venture anywhere off LI and you really don't realize how many places are awesome and much more affordable than NY!!
