Need advice..child being bullied

Curious as to what other parents would do in this situation..

My child has been having some issues with another child in her class. The other child has been bullying my child for months, calling her names (stupid, ugly, things like that) and now it has escalated to hitting and kicking.

After the name calling I spoke with my child's teacher, then it continued so I met with the Asst. Principal, that was last month..Then the hitting started, again I went to the teacher. I had a very lengthy conversation with her and she assured me they (school, and the other child's parents) were going to work on it and it wouldn't happen again. Of course she was wrong, Monday my daughter was hurt on the arm (the other child grabbed it and squeezed it very hard and refused to let go) and then yesterday the other child kicked my kid in the leg. My child however kicked her back this time. I do not believe in that, I've been teaching my child to tell the teacher whenever someone hits or pushes you, but I mean how much more can my child take. The school is obviously not doing enough to control this situation.

After the break I plan on meeting with the principal but I really don't know what the school should be responsible for? Does anyone else have any experience with this kind of situation. I would really appreciate all the advice.
TIA

by the way this is in Kindergarten.

If the school is not being responsive (and it doesn't sound like they are doing enough), I would write an email to the Principal, Assistant Principal, the teacher & cc: the Superintendent. I wouldn't wait until the break.

It's the most extreme way you can escalate the matter & the way to get the school district to respond the quickest.

It also documents that you have notified the school & they have been ineffective at protecting your daughter. Make sure to outline the incidents that took place (dates/times, if you have them) & the times you've notified the school in the email - even if they have that info.

If you want me to take a look at the draft, FM me.

My instinct is to go to the parents. Do ou have their number? If I saw the child i would ask her if she has a problem with DD.I have no problem stepping over that line to protect my child from some other kid.

My BFF was bullied in grammar school by 2 girls for months, the teachers really couldn't help. BFF mother yelled at the girls and it never happened again

I would have done what you did regarding the name calling. If the school/teacher was doing something about it wouldn't have become physical. At that point I would have been at this kid's front door. And I can assure you once I spoke to the mother this would stop fast.

Thanks I am actually going to write an email, and send it before the break is over. I do not want to speak to the parents about this. The mother is one of those mothers who always says..."not my child". She even tried putting the blame on my kid saying that my kid was bulling her child. Which holds no truth since my kid is not the only kid that has a problem with this other child. So I feel that speaking to them will do nothing but may start a huge mess between us parents. Besides it is the schools responsibility to get involved and resolve these issues. They shouldn't just stand by and let the parents fight it out.
thank you so much for your suggestions though.

I'd be writing a letter to the superintendent and school board that you feel they are not doing anything to protect your child from bullying, and if your child continues to be physically harmed you will be going to the police. Clearly whatever they are doing isn't working.

I agree with this. I do have a feeling that if this was 4/5th graders, their response would be different. I realize it's kindergarten, but this stuff needs to be nipped in the bud early on, and should receive the same punishment as an older child. Suspension, etc.

Out of curiosity.. this is a private catholic school, if I wanted to go to the school board/superintendent, do I contact the district that the school is in, or my district.
I'm new to all of this since this is my first child and our first real issue with the school.

thanks,

The school board has no control over private schools. You would need to deal with the private school directly. Good luck.

Unfortunately you will. We didn't receive much support when it came to a bullying situation - in fact, it was turned around on us by the Catholic school principal.

In case someone came across this post by googling, I'm referring to psycho, megalomaniac principal at Trinity Regional School.

In the K-1 building where I work, they suspend kindergarteners for physical altercations, Especially if its not a 1st offence.

To go above the head of your principal, you will need to seek out the Diocese.

If the school isn't being responsive - I would go to the pastor of the parish and work from there.

Maybe have a meeting with the school the children and the parents of the bully

Good Luck

I would definitely meet with the principal now, the teacher is just not helping in this matter and it seems the Asst. Principal did nothing either. Good luck

Re: Need advice..child being bullied

I sent the email last Wednesday and could you believe I have not heard from anyone yet. I even seen both the principal and asst. Principal yesterday since I volunteer everyday for lunch. They just looked me in the eye, smiled and kept walking. As if they were too busy to stop and talk with me. I am giving them till tomorrow and then I am going to walk in the office and demand a meeting with the principal. Something has to be done or I will have no choice but go to the diocese.

The most disturbing thing is, my dd has health issues. She just had another major surgery on her abdomen last friday, the third in 3 years. So her being physically pushed and hit is a big deal and the school knows this.
I am at a complete loss..the reason we decided on catholic school was mainly because of dd's health issues, but now it seems like we might have been wrong.
I wish it was that easy to just pull her out and send her to another school but it isn't. We were already told by another catholic school that bc of her health issues they wouldn't accept her, but honestly they were much more rude than that.
Well I'm going up to the school again today so we'll see how it goes.

thanks for letting me vent...; )

With health issues, you would think they'd be even more careful & more on top of these things.

I'm surprised they're disregarding it particularly because you are active in the school.

From my experience, it is a world of difference between Catholic & public school. Catholic schools are run like a little fiefdom & the Diocese seems to have very little involvement. They tend to give the school the authority to handle it. Public schools adhere to a hierarchy & seem to work more efficiently to resolve issues since they do answer to NYS.
