keeping raccoons out of garbage??

we have tried what we can, bought new cans with better tops, tried putting bricks on them to hold them down, were planning on putting up new fencing at the end of this month but still dont know if that will help. does anyone have any experience with keeping them out or away?

We had an elaborate bungy cord wrapped around and through the handles... that lasted for a coupe of years but then they gnaw through the cords.

We also sprayed the bags with some horrible spray... had extract of deer urine or something in it (can you tell I'm a Nassau girl living in SuffolkChat Icon ) that was supposed to keep them away... well, must smell like some sexy cologne to the racoons that come to our houseChat Icon Chat Icon

When my kids were babies I was up one night feeding them and though two men were rummaging through my garbage pails, nope it was the racoons... they are noisy... furry gang members...lol.

So now we keep our garbage in a can in the garage until the night before we put it out. For some reason the racoons will not topple over a can that's on the streetChat Icon

Very easy solutionj that has worked for us.

Get a spray bottle and fill it eith amoni. We do a few squirts around both cans when we put the garbage out. Works every time.

Re: keeping raccoons out of garbage??

We have those ones erica posted and our racoons just knawed a giant hole in the side of each one. These guys are relentless...even I turning on the light and throwing something at them didn't deter them, the racoon just looked at me as if to say" is that all you go lady"....

I am going to try the ammonia this week - thanks for the tip.
