Mitro VP
I have MVP. I also have a "slow leak" in my heart. My dr said it won't be an issue until i am 65. So that is no issue. I have heart palps at night when I lay down and was given a beta blocker. It seems to work. Does anyone else take a beta blocker for this? Which one? Does it help with the heart palp? Do you see a cardio to get meds? i'm hoping my pcp can give me refills b/c my co pay for cardio is a lot. Thanks.

Re: Mitro VP
I personally don't have MVP but know people who do.
Stay away from all caffeine, it will just add to the heart palps.
I was on Beta Blockers for a rapid heartbeat with palps when I was Hyperthyroid. I can't for the life of me remember which ones, but I know that my pcp was able to give me refills so I wouldn't worry about having to see the cardio each time (Unless you're feeling worse - then I'd see the specialist)
GL I hope you start feeling better

I have the same thing. I take Metoprolol and it really helped with the heart palps! I feel so much better when on the medication it is not even funny. I only take 12.5mg at night which is a very low does. It cut down on the palps a good 95% I would say.

Interesting. I learned on Friday my murmur has gotten louder, is that a beta blocker? I need to have more tests done again and go back in 2 weeks. If you say it helped, I will bring it up. Thanks.

I have mitral valve prolapse.. I assume this is the same thing? .. Anyway I was told to do nothing.. Just avoid caffeine. My symptoms kicks up in times of high stress or in different points of my cycle/pregnancy (so hormones can impact it- in my experience).

Re: Mitro VP
I have mild MV regurgitation, palps, tachy, etc... I take a beta blocker called atenolol. My doesn't not help with palpitations that much. Nothing really eliminates them, it just makes the symptoms less noticeable. You're PCP should be able to prescribe them. If I were you, I would consult an electrophysiologist. I see Dr. Levine at St. francis.

Re: Mitro VP
I have MVP. So does my dad. We weren't told to do anything or avoid anything. We both drink plenty of caffeine. The only things we find that causes episodes are stress and fatigue.
Oh, and we need to pre-medicate for the dentist. (But also need to anyway because of metal in our bodies--he has had a hip replacement, and I have had multiple spinal fusions and have lots of metal in my back)
I think MVP can be very mild, or more severe. I would follow your doctor's instructions, because they may be specific to your case/severity.

I agree. The advice I gave the ppster was for me and I have a mild case.
and to answer the OP's question, yes, the med I am on metoprolol is a beta blocker.
