Budget and Savings Question
DH and I are trying to save as much as possible. We're trying to figure out the amount of money we need to live (comfortably) and how much is left for savings.
My question is how much of your salary do you actually save?

10% goes into 401K
5% into emergency savings
I also have a smaller savings account that I try to throw "whatever's left" into and use that to pay bills and such that may come up on occasion to avoid dipping into the emergency savings.

10% into 401k
25% into savings
We went from saving nothing to saving 25% a month.
We stopped spending money on unessasary things and I started couponing. Its amazing how easy it has been.

Total of 20% into 403B and a general savings account.
I also put in another 6% of my take home into 529 plans.
I could probably be more stingy and say no to a lot more things but I am able to do the above and manage an okay lifestyle that I don't want to give up.

I chose 10% but I dont think its accurate. 10% of my monthly income goes straight to my 401K, but I dont reallly budget for savings because my savings is already in my checking account. I should get better about that - I just look at the whole balance and hope it increases by at least $500-1,000 after each month. Since I work part time, there is unsteady cash flow so some months I save $800, and other months I save zero (like February when I had ZERO income from my side business).
