Kids going into kindergarten this fall...
If its full day, are they buying or bringing lunch?
Most likely dd will buy as she eats pop tarts and goldfish and thats about it. And I can't pack that everyday.
It's 2.50 a day, and we can pay online so I don't have to worry about her with money or not telling her teacher, etc.
What is everyone doing?

DS is very picky, so, I'll be packing what he likes so I know he ate lunch. If I let him buy, he'll probably toss it in the trash.

See, I feel like she would have more options if she buys.
And if she sees other odd using, she'll want to buy too.

Re: Kids going into kindergarten this fall...
Keep in mind, also, that most schools only give the kids 20 minutes to buy and eat their lunch nowadays. (ridiculous) I have been in the cafeteria and see how many kids that buy lunch end up dumping most of it because by the time they get the lunch and sit down they have no time to eat.

Re: Kids going into kindergarten this fall...
At DD's school there is a 40 min block (which they call lunch). But in actuality it is 20 to eat and 20 for recess. I plan to pack most if not every day. DD has some food allergies so then I don't have to worry about it. Plus I want to make sure she has a good lunch and not just eating junk.
Etd to add- I was pretty sure that they said that was standard in the schools.

This is really true, especially for younger kids. A good friend at school volunteers at the cafeteria and told me this. I have my DS buy once a week, a particular meal he really likes, but I send food the other days, so at least I know he'll have time to eat a reasonably healthy meal (sandwich and fruit, etc)
As the kids get older, I think there's more peer pressure to buy lunch, so I figured I'll take advantage of the younger years where there's no stigma attached to bringing lunch and save some $$$
And yes, 20 min for lunch and 20 for recess is pretty standard these days. Seems so rushed for 5/6 year olds, but it's the norm.

Re: Kids going into kindergarten this fall...
If that was all my kid ate, I wouldn't waste $2.50 a day for the food to go in the trash
I will be packing. Waiting in the lunch line takes forever and a day, and I can pack for less money, and healthier.

Re: Kids going into kindergarten this fall...
I'm not sure.
I think it's a lot easier for her to buy (for ME! ), but she's a bit of a picky eater, so it probably won't work. I think I'll try to pick a couple of days a week that she'll buy (based on the menu) and pack her lunch the other days.

Re: Kids going into kindergarten this fall...
Definitely packing it! Don't want her wasting precious time on line, as I have heard from a number of people in different districts that it can be an issue.
I was told 20/20 also in my district, so I would definitely confirm they get the whole 40 minutes to eat. They might, but it might be because they keep them in from recess to finish.

Re: Kids going into kindergarten this fall...
My son is finishing up kindergarten. For more then half of the year I packed his lunch everyday. Then all of a sudden he said he wanted to buy. So he buys almost daily, but once a week or so he'll ask me to pack him lunch.

Re: Kids going into kindergarten this fall...
I'm finding it interesting that many of you are saying that your schools have only 40 min for both lunch and recess. That's like no time at all! Where I teach, we have an hour, so 30 min for each (makes a big difference!). I have K orientation at my DD's new school this Tues, so I'll have to make sure to ask how long her lunch/recess will be.

Where do you teach (which district) that they get an hour for lunch and recess out of curiousity?

Re: Kids going into kindergarten this fall...
DD was in KG this year and we packed lunch for her maybe 5 days so far this year.
If you prepay 180 or 360 lunches in our district you get it for 2.05 versus 2.50.
With my son entering KG in Sept, I am going right to him buying. I leave for work before anyone is up in the morning, and my husband already has a lot going on with getting everyone ready for school and work.

I am having some anxiety about this! I will probably pack his lunch most days since he is super picky...but maybe on pizza days let him buy his lunch...

Re: Kids going into kindergarten this fall...
I checked our website, and the elementary school kids get 55 minutes for lunch and recess combined. 30 for lunch, 25 for recess.

Re: Kids going into kindergarten this fall...
My DD is in K now. She only buys once a week...she's picky. She likes the day that they have the garden salad & pizza. I used to get her the "brunch of lunch" when they offered that every other week but she didn't eat most of it. They would have waffles with tater tots and sausage and she would just eat the waffle and toss the rest. I learned quickly that was a wasted lunch.

Ita wih this. But I think her school offers Fresh fruits and they have to take it. She loves strawberries, apples, bananas. So I'm sure they will have that. I don't think they only offer junk, kwim?

Re: Kids going into kindergarten this fall...
DS brings lunch/snack every day. Believe me there is pressure even in K to do what everyone else is doing or bringing. Most of his friends buy lunch. My DD will be entering K in the fall and will bring lunch as well.

Re: Kids going into kindergarten this fall...
I pack my kids lunch 90% of the time. They pick what they want and I make it for them.
School lunches for them are $4.50. For 2 kids, 5 days a week, I can't afford it! We look at the weekly menu that's posted every Sunday night. IF they see a lunch that they like/want, they get it. They actually prefer to bring, but enjoy buying when they do.
Their lunch period is 30 minutes, with 30 minutes for recess. Even then, for the K-3 grades, those ordering will have their choices sent down to the cafeteria so it's ready when they get down there. They go to a small, private school so it works.

Re: Kids going into kindergarten this fall...
He'll get a little of both. Our lunch program is from local restaurants and he is picky so he won't eat CHinese food or deli food. But he'll eat pizza day, pasta day and bagel day at school. The other days he'll bring lunch...most likely bagels, rolls or cheese "tacos" because those are his typical lunch foods these days.
