Touring a new program

My son will be entering kindergarten i sept and we are planning on touring a program in the william floyd SD....

What questions should i be asking about their program...they mentioned they want me to see an 8:1:1 program...but i would like to see a 6:1:1 program too so i have something to compare it to...

He is currently in DDI so he has been well taken care of there and they taught him alot! Anyone with William Floyd SD experience? TIA

Re: Touring a new program

I have no experience with William Floyd but my DD is just finishing up kindergarten now in an 8:1:1.

These are a few of the things I asked and looked for before she started school.

Meet all the teachers, principal, assistant principal. I would ask if the kids are getting adapted specials and see the areas (mini gym, etc.), if the class room has Teacher Assistants or Teacher Aides in them. Where do the kids eat lunch. Are they at a separate table or do they sit with other kids. Do they have any socialization with the "typical" kids at school (buddies or playground). I would ask about discipline, communication with parents (do they write in the communication book daily, do they prefer emails). Can the kids join after school activities and have the TA go with them.

Does William Floyd have a 6:1:1 class? Alot of districts don't have both.

Good luck!

Re: Touring a new program

My opinion is that they want you to see the 8:1:1, because that is what they think is the appropriate placement for him. I would ask if they have a 6 and/or a 12, so you can compare and see what you think is the most appropriate placement.

I would also ask about support services if he gets them - do they do push in, pull out, group, or a combination of them? I asked my district if the self contained classes are included in things like school assemblies, lunch in the cafeteria, etc. - will they be around typical kids throughout the day and week? I also asked about what opportunities there would be for mainstreaming.
