Looking to buy a home in my school district. Am I crazy?
First off Im the Phys Ed Teacher so I have 100% of my students.
I have 3 children who would be in district.
Would it be insane to buy at the school Im teaching at? It would be convenient. No before or after care.

Re: Looking to buy a home in my school district. Am I crazy?
I live one block away from the district I work in so I am not in my district, but I get the benefit of being as close as possible without having any of my students as y neighbors. I love it - it is so convenient. Sure, sometimes I see some of my students at the supermarket, but in all honesty I do not see them that often.

I see the benefits but I do not think I would want to work in the district where I live.

I don't think it's crazy at all! Sounds very convenient. Would you have to teach your own kids, or would they go to a different school within your district?

I teach at the school my kids go to...it can be challenging, but I keep a low profile and haven't had any issues.

I wouldn't, personally. You'd be running into the kids you teach all the time.
I also teach MS kids, so maybe that skews my judgement slightly

Re: Looking to buy a home in my school district. Am I crazy?
The kids could go to the actual school I teach in depending on which house I buy.
The thing is I think my district is great. Id love for my children to go here. Im just not as impressed with the neighboring districts, where its also cheaper to live.
I would consider Bayport/Bluepoint but theres no bussing. I like Oakdale but Connetquot HS is so far away. Eh IDK. I have no idea what to do, where Im at... ugh For all my luck Id get a house where I teach and then Id get involutarily transferred to another school LOL.
Oh and I would see my children 2x a week b/c I teach phys ed. We team teach, so even if they arent my students I would see them :)

Re: Looking to buy a home in my school district. Am I crazy?
Many of the teachers in my district live IN the district and there are really no problems with it. I teach HS and many of the students know approximately where I live and it has never been an issue. They see me running in their town all the time and honk and wave as they drive by.
I would think with elementary school they might be a little more excited to see you in the store and if you bump into parents while you are out, running errands could take longer. I have bumped into parents before and I usually politely wave, but I try not to engage in long winded conversations with them.

Re: Looking to buy a home in my school district. Am I crazy?
While I think that is a great opportunity, I do think you will need to transfer so that you do not teach your own children. In my district where I live, many teachers live in our district but none of them can teach there own children, and most transfered to a different school to avoid problems. In the school where I teach, 3 teachers have placed their children into our school. They are never allowed to teach the same grade as their kids are in so they actually have to move around quite a bit.

Re: Looking to buy a home in my school district. Am I crazy?
I live 3 miles from my school, but it is a different district. I sometimes see students but that is if I am in their area, I would personally not want to live IN my district, close makes it easy but too close can be annoying IMO and I would not want my DC to attend where I work.

Re: Looking to buy a home in my school district. Am I crazy?
My mom taught in my hs and it was fine. It was always nice because we would have to always check our schedule in the spring "to make sure my sister or I did not have her , ( aka hand pick teachers).
Once or twice we could not take a class bc she was the only teacher who taught it, but she was in a very small special area.

Re: Looking to buy a home in my school district. Am I crazy?
My MIL worked in DH's high school and she knew all of his and SIL's friends. It would be an nice commute, and at the high school level, make your teenager very easy to supervise. I wouldn't live/send my child to the school I worked in, but in DH's district, I'd definitely do it.

I think you put your coworkers into an awkward position. Plus grading your children's friends doesn't sound fair.

There are a LOT of teachers who teach and live in the district where I work. I don't see anything wrong with it as long as YOU are comfortable with it!

Re: Looking to buy a home in my school district. Am I crazy?
i just stumbled upon this, am not a teacher but thought I would offer insight...
our AD moved into our town and moved out within 8 months everywhere she went, people stopped her to chat with her. Kids would ride by her house. You have no real privacy.
Personally, I would NOT move into a town I teach in

I would think this really depends on your students. I live in the town over and have never had kids come to my house and many have a pretty good idea of where I live.
Most teachers live in the actual district and have students as neighors and as far as I know, it has never been an issue.
