Penny for your thoughts...

Here I am at the 2 year mark of trying to conceive baby #2. (Sorry I know many of you have gone much longer and yet have your take home baby UNFAIRLY!)
I just think I've reached my limit. Doc is scheduling for second surgery and removal of tubes so that IVF will have higher sucess rate. Our insurance covers one fresh and one frozen.

Here's the crazy part. I can't get past not having tubes and it being so FINAL. If it doesn't work then essentially that's it. I can't afford past what the insurance covers. (Hey at least it's covering some thank God!)
I also don't want to foolishly go through another surgery and it not work.

I have been talking it over with DH and he also does not want me to have another surgery. (I've managed to have one every year for the past 3 years!) I have gained 19 pounds since my last one. I just don't know which way is up anymore. I am sitting her crying as I type this. (F U AF!)

SORRY. OK here is my question..... I am leaning more towards trying the 2 cycles of IVF and not removing tubes. I know it's less successful and higher ectopic rate but some wierd way I would feel better? Have any of you exhausted your IVF tries and then reverted back to inseminations?

I thank you all for your feedback and I wish you all less pain in your hearts than I feel tonight. Chat Icon

What is the reason for removing the tubes?

Our situation is VERY different I'm sure... but to answer your last question, I was going to go back to IUIs after a few IVFs and FETs. I figured the cycles would be less stressful and I liked the idea of fitting in 2 IUI cycles in the time it takes for one IVF/FET cycle. I'm not sure how much you know of my path, but ultimately we are using a surrogate and are currently in the process. I am not cycling on my own at all.

I agree, taking the tube out seems sooo final, but I think it also depends n the reason for doing it and your age. Could you sit with your doctor before a final decision is made? Have you gone for any second opinions?

why does your dr want to take out your tubes?

we are about to start our first round (and hopefully last!) of IVF and i only have one tube but my other one was removed b/c of emergency surgery for an ectopic pregnancy. do you have a history of ectopics?

Re: Penny for your thoughts...

It appears my tubes were terribly damaged during emergency appendectomy. The last surgery was a successful repair but it didn't last too long as they are both blocked again.
I know it seems hopeless but not having tubes seems worse at this point and I can't put my finger on why

i'm sorry you are going through this Chat Icon have you gotten a second opinion? it seems extreme to me that the dr wants to remove your tubes b/c they are blocked. IVF bypasses the tubes so it takes them out of the scenario for the most part. (i know the embryos can still travel to the tubes) but before even trying to make the decision about whether to remove them i would see a second dr and and maybe even a third Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Do you have hydrosalpinges (fluid buildup in your tubes?) That is usually why a dr would want to remove them before IVF, because they worry about the fluid possibly leaking into your uterus and making implantation difficult.

Re: Penny for your thoughts...

Yes I have slight fluid in my tubes now. Last years surgery drained them and cleared them up. I guess the fluid is back but I do think it's not as severe as before according to the second HSG. Now do you think it's foolish I don't take them out? Will IVF be a wash? Literally?! (I'm glad my sense of humor has stayed intact!) Chat Icon

Initially I saw 3 other doctors all with same diagnosis but none wanted to try and repair tubes. Only my current Dr who was the only one willing to at least try the surgery. I was and am very grateful

Yes. This is what I was thinking. Originally both my RE and OB thought that I had a hydrosalpinx and fluid was leaking into my uterus.
I don't know how many times you can have your tubes cleared but I guess if they are disruptive and you'll need surgery to repair them every so often, what's the point of having the tubes if you're having IVF? I think you have to make sure that they're the problem before you take them away.

Second I would definitely get a second opinion. Doesn't IVF bypass tubal issues? If so then I don't see why your RE wants them removed. I agree with your DH no more surgery especially unnecessary surgery. Good LuckChat Icon

ITA. IVF is a big step. But removing both of your tubes is an even bigger step. At the very least, I'd get a 2nd opinion before doing anything so drastic.

Good luck, and I hope this journey leads you to your 2nd baby! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Penny for your thoughts...

I think it really depends on the specific condition of your tubes. Are the hydro tubes visible on ultrasound, or only on the hsg? If visible on ultrasound then they are considered more severe and may be more likely to interfere with IVF implantation. Also, do they think your tubes will ever work properly again or are they fully blocked? If they are fully blocked and repair is not likely to restore function to the tubes, then that wouldbe an argument to remove them.

I will tell you my story. When I was 20 I had a major surgery and lost one of my tubes due to infection. Nine years later we discovered my remaining tube was blocked and was a hydrodalpinx. It was visible on ultrasound. I saw an RE who would have wanted to remove the tube and go straight to IVF, but he felt it was too risky to open up my abdomen again due to scar tissue, risk of bowel injury, etc. I decided to go ahead with IVF. I did two fresh cycles and one frozen, none of which workEd. I then went for a second opinion, and the RE wanted to attempt the surgery but we decided to try another fresh cycle first. That cycle was successful and I'm now 19 weeks pregnant. It took four cycles but it did work!

i agree with this. If your tubes will affect the IVF cycle and is definitely the problem then maybe taking them out is the best senario for you. I personally wouldnt want to keep them and then have to keep having surgeries for repair. But i also understand how "final" it will feel if you decide to remove them. I think you should definitely get a second opinion!

I had tubal issues but it was due to having endo/scar tissue and i did 2 cycles of IVF before getting my bfp. Good luckChat Icon Chat Icon keep us updated on what you decide

Re: Penny for your thoughts...

THANK YOU ALL!!!!

I always feel so much better once I hear your feedback!

I called the office today and they gave me an appointment Wed. I'm going to talk it over with Doc but I think I am set on trying one IVF cycle and seeing what happens. My rationale is that if it ends up being an ectopic than they will probably have to take out my tube anyway. Is that a crazy way of looking at it?

Either way THANK YOU GIRLS for always listening and being so knowledgable. You have all made this long unwanted journey bearable! You guys rock!
