------------------------------------------------
So as you know i work with ferals. I had 16 in a colony fixed. I had 3 boys left to do. One of the boys got pregnant Chat Icon So much for my cat sexing skills… The Momma was 'fairly' friendly (meaning, she won't rip my hand off) so my boyfriend suggested we bring her in to let her have her kittens inside & be safe, so i drop trapped her & brought her in. We figured we could try to get them homes. She had 3 kittens. We have been handling them since the day they were born. They have visitors almost every day so they are SUPER friendly. In ALL my kitten experience i have NEVER had such friendly fun kittens! EVER!! And actually Momma has gotten really friendly & we can pet her now. So we had homes for all of them – one actually was being ‘fought’ over. We had 3 people that wanted her. I actually gave a kitten that a friend had to someone who wanted her because we thought we had homes for all of them and had someone else asking for a kitten! Well, BOTH people who wanted her backed out and I had given the 3rd person someone else's kitten that was looking for a home. So I found a home for another kitten and mine is going to wind up on the streets, I am so upset over it! Chat Icon because worst case scenario, I have her fixed & release her with her momma, but she’s SO FRIENDLY not scared of ANYONE or anything so we are concerned she will not live long outside. Anyway, I don’t have great pics but she is the marble calico. She is 6 weeks, as I mentioned she is SO FRIENDLY! We are in suffolk, I can deliver though! Chat Icon We will also pay for her spay at Save-a-Pet in Port Jeff.

She is the brown marbled calico (she has some orange on her)

omg... and i hate responding like this since i can't, but I really really wish i could take her.

clover is in mid/late stage kidney disease, and although she is presently responding well to treatment, i just don't think it would be fair to her at 18+ years old and in poor health.

i hope you find someone soon!

she's so cute! can't you keep her until you find her a home, why turn her out on the streets?

why turn her out on the streets?

For many reasons. I clean up other people's mistakes. I moved into my cottage and there was an out of control feral colony there. Out of my own pocket I personally trapped and had 16 cays fixed. I can only do 4 at a time. They are WILD cats so i have to TRAP them. I have to take the day off of work to take them to a discount vet over 45 minutes away and then go back & pick them up. i need to provide a space for them to recover for 3 days. This is the second feral colony I have done this with, the first had over 30 cats and was near my old office.

This cat was female and I didn't realize it & she got pregnant. Generally I try to get all females fixed first. If i hadn't brought her in at all, her & her 3 kittens would be on the street right now, if they had even lived. Instead I brought her in and she had her kittens in warmth & safety. Every day, twice a day I feed them, play with them so they’re friendly, change the litter (kittens I use a newspaper litter so they don’t eat it and die and it needs to be changed 2x a day or it smells awful). They need to be kept separate because there is a great dane, a blind/deaf cat and another cat that hates other cats already in the house so an entire bedroom is lost to them being there.

It is a huge inconvenience of space and my time & money but I do it to TRY to get these animals a better life. It is worth it to me knowing no matter what that they are fixed and that alone means a better life for them. The momma will be spayed, stopping the cycle and I try to get the babies homes so they never have to know ‘living on the streets’ but if I kept every kitten I tried to find a home for I would LITERALLY have 100 cats. The BEST I can do is that I have them spayed or neutered and I provide outdoor feral cat shelters food and water for them, but the problem is there are millions of unwanted kittens and cats looking for homes. I can only do what I am doing.

I felt the need to explain this because I feel you are making me sound heartless that I will put this kitten out on the street, but the reality is I have a huge heart and I HATE that I have to let kittens back out but I have and I will continue to do so because I don’t have a choice. Once she is about a month older no one will want her because she’s not ‘a cute little kitten’ anymore. That’s the reality. I have spent thousands of dollars and weeks of my time on this, I have been doing it for over 10 years. I have had countless cats fixed breaking the cycle of kittens. If you still want to question me, so be it, I do the best I can.

Kara- what you do is so amazing!
Do you have any idea if the kitten likes small dogs (who loves and is very gentle w/cats)?
Who I'm thinking of is a bit of a long shot, but thought I'd ask just in case.

Kara, what you do is truly amazing. I dont think anyone can understand the magnitude of what you do, until you actually break it down as you have. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Thanks ladies. I guess i am defensive because i DO feel really guilty & bad.

So the reason you drop trap is because a “have a heart” trap you can't target a specific cat, whatever cat goes in is what you get. With a drop trap 20 cats can go in and out and you wait and only drop on the cat you want. Sometimes you get lucky and get more than one cat, too! My best shot I got ALL 5 KITTENS from a litter in one drop! The hard part is transferring them from the drop trap to a carrier and sometimes kittens can even slip though the netting. Anyway, it’s a waiting game, sometimes the cat you want doesn’t show up & you set it up for nothing. I have waited several hours for a cat that didn't show. You have to make an appointment with the vet and trust me when i say feral cats DO NOT go by YOUR schedule! Sometimes the cats are reticent to go in it, which was the case with this kitten. It just totally cracked me up that she wouldn’t go in.

I don't really know if anyone will appreciate the humor in this, but this was one of my failed drop trap attempts....

That is fantastic! I am involved on a much smaller level with a colony and its never ending.
I think you are amazing! you do so much more for these innocent babies than some people that have cats as pets actually do.
