UPDATE on 1 week old kitten 5/13

There is a ferral cat outside of our house that recently had a litter of four kittens (about a week ago). Unfortunately we noticed this morning that three of the kittens had passed away. The fourth kitten cries and cries anytime the mother leaves. We have seen the kitten nurse but we are worried that she is not getting any milk. Is it normal for a week old kitten to cry non stop? We don't want to take the kitten from the mom but we also don't want this kitten to die as well.

UPDATE: I'm am so sick to my stomach right now. We just got home and there was a message on our machine letting us know that our little Ava had passed away. Yesterday they said she was doing well...I can't understand what happened unless the girl yesterday had no idea what she was talking about. I am so sad and I keep thinking that maybe I did the wrong thing by bringing her there. She was such a sweet, innocent little girl and I am going to miss her so much. I pray that she is in Heaven and at peace. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

If the mother is coming back then I would not take the kitten away. The mother is most likely hunting for food for the baby. However if she is not, she might have abandoned it, then I would take it to the shelter.

Also, do not give a kitten milk. It will kill him/her. There is special formula for kittens.

Re: Please help...1 week old kitten

If the mama cat has abandoned the kitten, you can feed it kitten formula with a bottle. You should take it to the vet who will be able to tell you how to properly care for the kitten. If three of the four have died, the mama is probably not taking good care of them.

The mama cat is with them all the time except when we feed her and she comes out to eat. That's why I don't understand why the three kittens died. Is it possible that she is not producing milk?

Re: Please help...1 week old kitten

if the mom is still in the picture dont worry about the kitten, its a baby its will cry alot. You really never know why the other 3 died they couldve had a congenital defect, and thats why they passed away

She will have good advice. Also call a local vet and ask for advice. If the mom doesn't come back (keep a close eye), you can take over and feed the kitten mother's milk (recipe has to be made).

Re: Please help...1 week old kitten

The mama cat took the kitten and left her in our neighbors yard behind his shed. It was getting so cold out and the mother was not going back to it. It was just crying and crying for hours. (The mama cat was just hanging out in front of our house) DH and I could not stand the thought of it freezing to death so late that night we took her inside, warmed her up and tried to bottle feed her. I called a friend of mine who works at the Freeport Animal Shelter and she told me they had a nursing mother cat there. I brought the kitten (who I named Ava) in yesterday and so far things seem to be going ok...I just hope that she continues to get stronger and that she is ok. Please send this little one some prayers. She is so small and weak. Re: UPDATE- 1 week old kitten

DH called the shelter today to see how Ava is doing. They told us that a vet tech has taken her home to bottle feed every two hours. I can only guess this means she was not feeding or not feeding enough from her new cat mommy. Please send prayers for my little one...we are praying that she makes it through this and that we can bring her home soonChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

perhaps you can contact the vet tech and let them know you would like to keep the kitty. i had to hand feed my kitty when i found him abandoned in my parents backyard at about 3 wks old. it wasn't easy, but i fed him every 2-3 hours for weeks......i didn't get any sleep--but it was a great bonding experience!

We did the same thing for 4 kittens my dad found whose mom never came back. We fed them around the clock with mother's milk and baby doll bottles. We became so attached we kept 3 of the 4 and my aunt took the one we didn't keep. We did it, but yes, it was me and my mom taking care of them.

Re: UPDATE- 1 week old kitten

As long as she is being bottle fed every couple of hours she should do ok. I had to do that with our cat when we got her. My friend found her laying next to her mother who was hit by a car and killed at Nassau Community college and brought her home and gave her to me. I had to bottle feed her for a few weeks and she is happy and healthy now.
