Chiropractors - Good and Bad
I didn't consider this a health related question thus I posted it here.
So, I've been thinking about going to a chiropractor. I have lots of neck pain sometimes and am not happy about my posture.
But, while I hear some people rave about going to the chiropractor, I hear from others that they'd never go to one. I even hear that it's not a respected "branch" of medicine. Do they even go to med school?
Just looking for people's opinions about what's good and potentially alarming about going to one before making my decision.

Re: Chiropractors - Good and Bad
All i know is that when I was going- I got relief from my back pain, neck pain, migraines, etc. My regular MD's answer to everything was - take some advil. Yeah ok- that will MASK the problem but not solve it. I really felt like I was getting relief from so many things and so many pains I was suffering. It was amazing.
The only problem I had was it was a time committment. At first I was going 3 times a week- and of course the co pay 3 times a week got expensive. Then they slowly cut you down and finally it was like once a month or whenever I felt off.
But all in all, I'd highly recommend it.
Sometimes I think they are on to something- rather than just pushing drugs or surgery on you, they are trying to fix the issue that is causing it.

Re: Chiropractors - Good and Bad
LOVE LOVE LOVE my chiropractor!
Been going to one since 2003. Haven't gotten the flu once since then (which is a positive side effect of chiropractic treatments). I used to get the flu every year.
My wife used to get major migraines....those went away.
Chiropractic is not just about the back. It's about preventative care so that you don't have to take meds.
I absolutely love it. FM me if you want my Dr's name in Massapequa!

Re: Chiropractors - Good and Bad
I have been seeing a chiro for 5 months, and I love it!
My neurologist said to stay away from the ones that jerk your neck, but mine just uses pressure. I think he's great, and I have seen such a huge improvement in some of the aches and pains I was dealing with.
ITA with the poster who said it's a lot in the beginning, but it gets better. Right now I go every 10 days-ish, which is totally manageable (it's super close to my house, and I can bring my DD).
I also have a great one in Massapequa if you need a rec.

Re: Chiropractors - Good and Bad
They go to chiropractic school, which is not as intense as medical school but it's still not easy and they are Doctors of Chiropractic Medicine. They actually spend more time learning about the spine specifically than most orthopedists do. I've had neck and back problems for years. Even after one chiropractic visit I get relief. I am picky about chiropractors, though and I will change practices if I do not like the person's touch or if they are too pushy for a lot of visits. Now that I have been going for a long time I get a sense of when I need to go and how often. Generally if I am in a cycle of a lot of pain, I will get relief right away but in order to keep that relief I will need several visits close together in time.
For the purpose of my work, proving disability cases, there is some caselaw that downplays the opinion and importance of chiropractors. So, the judges want to see opinions from MDs. I do not agree with these rules and I tell clients who see chiropractors to also have an MD. For most people, especially those who have such devere injuries that they are disabled, a combination of treatments will work best anyway.
Personally I would say to go to a chiropractor. I've tried everything and I keep going back to the chiropractor.

Re: Chiropractors - Good and Bad
I have been to chiropractors, but I do not go regularly, largely because I don't trust them. People that go regularly seem to love them. I have severe spinal issues, and for me, they need to be treated by a surgeon. But the real reason I do not go is because I know of at least one person who ultimately died as a result of a chiro. A friend's cousin went, got adjusted, and had a stroke in the parking lot as he was leaving, at 20 something years old. Ended up paralyzed, and ultimately died. When I have gone, I have said no "adjustments" or neck snapping. Massage is fine, the compresses are fine, etc. But all that stuff can be done by a PT as well. The last time I went to a chiro, despite what I said, the chiro snapped my neck without warning. After that, I won't go back.

Re: Chiropractors - Good and Bad
I've been going to my chiro since I was 16 for herniated disks and I always feel a huge relief. It was recommended that I get surgery years ago but I found that making fitness part of my everyday life has helped tremendously. I used to haves to sleep with a back brace and see my chiro 2-3x a week. Now I think I see her once every six month or longer just to make sure I'm good. I have herniated disks in my lower back do keeping my core tight is the key for me.

I saw all that to say... Seeing my chiro when I was at my worst helped so much. The therapy always gave me almost immediate relief.

Re: Chiropractors - Good and Bad
chiropractic works for me for some things, like headaches and stiffness. But for other things...not so much.
It's hard to find good chiro help, cuz the quacks make the good ones look bad.
some chiro's really did not know how to help with my issues. they tricked me into believing chiropractic was all i needed, when it wasn't, so i felt slighted and ended up getting worse.

Re: Chiropractors - Good and Bad
i'd go to a D.O. who performs osteopathic manipulative techniques instead. they have a medical degree (equivalent to MDs) and additional training in the manipulative techniques. they can also specialize in various area of medicine like MDs do.

Re: Chiropractors - Good and Bad
I won't say they are bad but I am trying to NOT go to a chiropractor anymore.
I realized that I was going a few times a month and it was almost an addiction--I needed to go to feel better and when I didn't go for awhile, I started to get pain again.
I decided to get a stronger back. For me, strengthening my lower back muscles have done wonders, I don't even need to go anymore. I used to have pain when I bent over the bathtub, etc and now I'm doing well without one.
I'd definitely look into seeing one but I know people that go way too often, IMO.

@RacheK I'm with you but I didn't feel addicted. I just found that after my back healed and I started really getting in shape, I didn't need to go.

Thats probably a better way to say it.
I had to go back to chiro because I would start not feeling great within 2 weeks of my last appointment but after a point, I didn't need it anymore. Then I got stronger and tried stopping and I was fine, no more back pain.

D.O.'s are wonderful. We have an osteopathic medical school here on LI and their professors have a clinic where we can take advantage of osteopathic manipulation. I highly, highly recommend it. It is NOT anything like the cracking, snapping, and adjustments described by patients of chiropractic. Dr. Susan Kooyman is wonderful. The clinic number is 516.686.1300. (They have one in Suffolk as well.)
