My running days are officially over
and I am so sad!
Running is like a drug to me...I love it...love the way it makes me feel and I feel like it is the best bang for your buck exercise wise. I have done multiple half marathons in the past, started training for a marathon and running was always a big part of my life.
I hurt myself at work in 2009 and had to have back surgery. After my surgery my surgeon told me I should avoid running bc it is bad for anyone's back. I did for a few years but a few months ago started running again. I was feeling great but then all of a sudden I started having back issues again. I know for sure it is the running so I stopped.
I know I am lucky to be able to exercise at all and in the grand scheme of things...this is really not a big deal. But it is a big deal to me. It makes me so sad and jealous when I see others that can run.
I don't know what I am looking for here but I just needed to vent a little!

My running days are officially over
That totally sucks and I hope that you find another form of exercise you are able to enjoy just as much.

Re: My running days are officially over
I know exactly how you feel and it sucks so much
I threw my knee out at the beginning of 2011. That same year I had big goals of running a sub 2hr half and a sub 25min 5k. I was increasing my speed and distance and really getting into it.
I tried physical therapy, I went to 2 doctors, had MRIs. Nothing worked. I still have a bad knee that gives out sometimes. I have trouble going down stairs and have to hold on.
I HATE IT SO MUCH!!! I wish it would magically fix itself, but I know I would need surgery and its not really an option (I can't take the time off of work and I'm pregnant right now anyway).
After my knee went out I ended up finding other exercises routines to fill the void. I got really into weight lifting, boxing, and HIIT. It's very, very hard, but it does get easier. I haven't found anything I love quite as much as running but it does still give me that endorphin rush I love.

Oh man, that sucks!!! Can you do short distances (i mean much shorter?). Did you know USATF has track meets? Maybe you could try the 100m, 200m, or 400m? http://www.long-island.usatf.org/TrackField/index.htm

Re: My running days are officially over
I can only imagine how hard it is. I love running too and I would be devastated if I was told I couldn't run.
Another exercise that I have become addicted to is Physique 57. I'm not sure if its convenient to you but the teachers cater to people with injuries and would make sure you are doing modifications right. Physique 57 might not be convenient for you but maybe a Bar Method or a Exhale Core Fusion class is.
Good luck.

I know what it's like! I have 2 herniated disks and anytime I run on pavement my back hurts. I usually don't feel if I run on the track with soft padding.... were you running or pavement? Either way, I'm sorry. I know if I couldn't do my fav workout I would be upset too. :(

Re: My running days are officially over
I had to stop running because of my knee too- I am sorry to hear this about your back.
I ordered the bowflex treadclimber- i don't like it as much as running but it is keeping me healthy and helping me to loose the babyweight after DC #3. I still miss running outside though.

Re: My running days are officially over
I know how you feel! I used to really love to run and then I hurt my back and had to stop for a while. I started again, but I have had so many lung issues this year (asthma, pnuemonia, etc.) that I can't run distance anymore. I can still do short intervals on a treadmill, but I am so nervous ever since I had an asthma attack when I was running and was far away from home with no inhaler and no phone. Scary stuff.
I do a lot of Zumba and spinning now and started doing more toning, and actually, I like the way my body looks now more than when I was running all the time!
You will find something you like, and that will take the place of running. My FH tore his Achilles and he can't run either. Now he is a spinning freak, lol.
