I lost my sweet Caramel last night...
She was one of my bunnies.... 8 years old, which is not old for a rabbit. She has always had digestive issues and has had bouts of stasis so when she stopped eating yesterday, we thought that's what it was again. Turns out it was bloat which she had once in the past and had beaten. She was not so lucky this time. My regular vet was closed so we took her to one they referred us to. They said she needed emergency surgery or her stomach would most likely rupture. We had the choice of surgery or putting her down. DH wanted to put her down so he could be there with her, but I needed to do everything possible for her so I pushed the surgery. She made it through the surgery, but they called us and told us that the reason for the initial blockage was a twist in her intestines. The part of the intestine that had twisted was dead and black and they only gave her a 10-20% chance of survival. They said if they woke her from the anesthesia and she subsequently died, it would be very uncomfortable and her intestines may even rupture. I couldn't put her through that. So we made the terrible decision to put her to sleep. I feel absolutely horrible that neither DH nor I was there with her when she passed. I should have let just let her go when DH was there. I hope she can forgive me.

People don't realize how bunnies can be family members too. I had one & think of her often. I am sorry for your loss

I am so sorry for your loss. It's hard not to second guess decisions we make. You tried to help her, to save her. I am sorry that you have to feel so sad and guilty for trying to save your beloved pet. Please try not to forget you were trying to save her.

Thank you all. This week has been hard. She was part of a bonded pair (with her sister, Lily) and now I'm just very worried about her. They have been together everyday since they were born and I read that when one of a pair dies, the remaining bunny can get very depressed and stop eating. I really hope this doesn't happen.
