1st graders and math levels
Where are your 1st graders in math levels? Do they do timed math fact tests? I am wondering if my DD is at the level she "should" be at in 1st grade. She has been struggling to do her subtraction facts under 10.
The teacher said mine should be studying intensely on the weekends at home because she is way behind the others in her class (a G&T program in a highly competative neighborhood in Eastern Queens, many of the children either have been doing rote memorization since 3 yo or they go to after-school academic programs). I don't want to push her beyond her usual HW load but I do make her study some flash cards based on the test that the teacher gives.
I know it's G&T but it's FIRST grade!!

Re: 1st graders and math levels
How about using the internet?
My DD's elementary school gives them all a license to ixl, which she loves.
It is all math related by grade level. I know parents can purchase a license, or I even believe you can do a trial.

Re: 1st graders and math levels
My child was not required to know them until second grade. He studied 10 minutes every weeknight to master them by NOvember.

Re: 1st graders and math levels
The NYS Common Core Standards in Mathematics for first grade, which are to be fully implemented next year, list mastery of addition & subtraction math facts to 20. One of the Core trainers I met defined mastery as being able to give a sum or difference as quickly as you can say your name.
HTH!

TY. The school is already starting to implement the CCS. I understand some work is required at home, but what I don't understand is how much is required at home vs. at school, for example, to memorize these facts.

Re: 1st graders and math levels
I would work on programs with her and make math fun. She needs to understand the concept. Pure memorization of math only hurts kids as they get older. When you memorize math you not always learnign how to do it so as it compounds it gets harder.
I hate when they teach memorization in math. MAth is about problem solving and speed should have nothing to do with it. Speed just comes from practice

I agree, but according to the teacher she needs to memorize and do the 30 problems in 2 min, before she moves on to the next level which starts back at 4 min, then 3, then 2.
I know my DD gets nervous and completely loses focus under pressure. Even at home, she just stares at the paper or looks away, at her fingers, puts her head down, whatever.
Meanwhile, like you said when it's fun, she does better. And both the teacher and I KNOW she can solve the problems.

Yea, but rote memorization is a lower level learning skill.... Yes she needs to do it in order to achieve higher level tasks, but timing is not that important. (As long as its reasonable.) Are they teaching her to solve word problems using this skill? And what is the next timed test they will give her? Multiplication? Because that should come after she has mastered some higher level skills with addition and subtraction in my opinion. Higher level thinking is what a gifted and talented program should be about.
