Can you turn down certain therapies from CPSE?
My 4.5 year old has ADHD combined type and is in the process of CPSE evals. She has always had amazing gross and fine motor skill. She ice skates, her balance is amazing, never noticed a deficit in these areas. The CPSE coordinator decided to just throw everything in for evals. So, DD had her PT eval in a sensory gym and was so sensory overloaded and all over the place. Needless to say, after getting the report, the physical therapist is going to qualify her for PT. There is no way I feel that she needs PT, her doctor does not think she needs PT. I don't want to overwhelm her with therapies. So what I am asking is, can I turn down the PT?

You can definitly refuse any services. It is very conmon for children diagnosed with ADHD to do very poorly on Some evals despite having great functional skills in those areas due to poor attention.

Just a thought... PT should be fun so if it's not too much of a hassle to take her for PT I'd do it. It definitely won't hurt her however if scheduling and other things are a concern then I'd pass too.

You can do a lot of good sensory work with PT. Like jumping in an exercise ball. Crawling in the fabric tunnels. PT is fun!
But yes, you can turn it down.
Why did she qualify in the 1st place?

You can definitely refuse but like the others said, PT is probably the least overwhelming of all the therapies. It's fun for them, it's like gym class/playtime. If she gets a good PT that's well versed in sensory integration therapies I think it would excellent for her.

ITA...DS can hit a ball with a bat 9/10 times, but they had a deficiency in gross.
They also scored his iq 40 points lower than his dev ped. Sometimes I think it's to get extra services for them. Kwim?

Re: Can you turn down certain therapies from CPSE?
I too wanted to turn down PT. it was suggested to me, to leave it in the IEP, and if I choose not to use it in 3 months then I can do it then. However, since DS is so active, I thought Of PT like playtime, so he will get pulled out to go play. I figured it would break up the day a little since he is starting a new school in September anyway.

yes you can refuse any services offered. I agree with the other posters that PT may be fun for her. My DS was getting PT since he was 3 and loved going. She did so much fun stuff like scooterboards and balls, etc. He doesn't qualify anymore for it and just ended a couple weeks ago but still asks if he can go I keep telling him he did so well, his PT has to help other kids now LOL

Hi Kristin You can turn it down but first I'd definitely ask them why she qualified; where her deficit(s) was/were
I'm interested to hear what they say

Re: Can you turn down certain therapies from CPSE?
we decided to keep it since we will put her in an intergrated pre-k next year. We figured since she will be at school anyway, to just let her receive all the services she can get. The OT is pretty certain she has SPD and not ADHD and feels that PT can really help that as well.
Laura, her deficits were in gross motor, lower half, when not in motion. She was constantly in motion so it was kind of hard to get a good read on her.
